Established in 2006 by Dr. Hernandez and his wife, his small facility has now grown into a single specialty group with multiple providers and an onsite physical therapist with an additional location in Lake Jackson, Texas. Looking toward the future, he aims to continue developing his practice throughout Fort Bend County. He also envisions hiring more physicians to join his team and opening additional satellite clinics.
Aside from managing his busy office, Dr. Hernandez spent four years as an assistant clinical professor at Baylor University. He notes that teaching was one of his most significant professional accomplishments, and he looks forward to becoming a faculty member again soon.
Dr. Hernandez chose rheumatology because it is considered one of the most challenging branches of medicine since rheumatic disorders can affect many organs throughout the body. He also found managing the diseases interesting, which is critical to his patients' overall health.
Civically invested, Dr. Hernandez has been very active with Africa New Life Ministries. Through the organization, he has sponsored two children from Rwanda since they were in elementary school. Dr. Hernandez also had the opportunity to meet them while on a mission trip to the country.
To prepare for his medical career, Dr. Hernandez earned a bachelor's degree at Angelo State University in 1991 and a Doctor of Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in 1996. He subsequently completed a residency in internal medicine at Baylor Saint Luke's Medical Center in 1999 and a fellowship in rheumatology at Baylor Saint Luke's Medical Center in 2001. Dr. Hernandez is board certified in rheumatology. He is also trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Dr. Hernandez is an elected fellow of the American College of Rheumatology. He is also an active member of the Texas Medical Association and the Harris County Medical Society. In recognition of his accomplishments, Dr. Hernandez received a GlaxoSmithKline Award and a Clinical Researcher of the Year Award from RAIN. Moreover, Houston Magazine named him as the Doctor of the Year.
