An accomplished climate scientist with considerable expertise in seasonal climate forecasting, climate scenario development, and interdisciplinary research, Dr. Siebert is currently a fellow with Climatebase, which aims to help those seeking jobs in the climate industry. Alongside his fellowship, he is a tutor with Ivy Bound Test Prep. Previously, Dr. Siebert worked as a senior staff associate with Columbia Climate School's International Research Institute for Climate and Society (2019-2022), where he started as a postdoctoral research scientist in 2016.
Dr. Siebert earned a Bachelor of Arts in Geosciences from Princeton University (cum laude, Sigma Xi), a Master of Arts in Climate and Society from Columbia University and a PhD in Geography from Rutgers University. As a student, he had internships with Ohio State University's Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center and the NASA-Goddard Institute for Space Studies' Center for Climate Systems Research. In 2015-16, he had a postdoctoral appointment at Princeton University's Environmental Institute working with an interdisciplinary research team on climate-economy problems using Integrated Assessment Models.
Dr. Siebert is a currently a member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and has been a member of the American Meteorological Society (AMS), and the Association of American Geographers (AAG) in the past. In addition to conferences of those professional societies, he has also presented research at conferences of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) and the African Monsoon Multi-Disciplinary Analysis (AMMA). He is author or coauthor of 15 peer reviewed publications, 15 reports and over 50 conference proceedings and has published in a number of high impact journals including International Journal of Climatology, Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology, Climatic Change and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
During his time at IRI, he was particularly proud of work on a forecast-based financing project in the African country of Niger, sponsored by the World Food Programme. His and his colleagues' efforts on the project led to a payout of almost $10 million from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund in response to an early season drought in 2022. He also takes pride in his efforts with the USAID sponsored Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) project in Rwanda in 2016-2019. Through this project, he led the publication of a paper detailing Rwanda's climatology with high resolution satellite data in the post-genocide period and trained and collaborated with staff in Rwanda's Meteorological Agency throughout the project. As a graduate student, Dr. Siebert won the John Mather Paper of the Year Award from the Association of American Geographers' Climate Specialty Group and a Dissertation Teaching Award from Rutgers. Though hard work and dedication have brought him far, he credits much of his success to the mentors he has had within the field. Looking forward, Dr. Siebert is seeking a job in the applied climate science field in academic, non-profit, government or private sectors. He is an avocational musician and a father of two young children.
