Drawing on over four decades of expertise in the field of academia, Dr. Henry specialized in history and social studies. Since her retirement in 2008, she has found much success as a professor emerita at Bemidji State University, where she served as an associate professor from 1988 to 2008. In this capacity, Dr. Henry focused on outreach, continuing education and recruitment efforts aimed at Black and African American students.
Dr. Henry initially began her career working as a secondary level schoolteacher for the Bunnell Department of Education in Florida from 1966 to 1968. Following this post, she taught secondary-level social studies and served as a social studies department chairperson for the Government of the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas between 1968 and 1983. Post retirement, Dr. Henry has authored, "The Girl from Jacksonville Who Dared to Dream, Hope and Believe!" in 2011 and "Feeling Like a Stranger in Your Hometown? Ask the Girl from Jacksonville!" in 2017. All proceeds from her books are donated to a scholarship fund for students attending Bemidji State University.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Henry pursued an education at Edward Waters College, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1964, followed by a Master of Arts from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1969. She continued her academic efforts at Florida State University, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1988. As a commitment to her field, she has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the National Education Association and the Phi Delta Kappa International professional association, among others. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Dr. Henry has contributed to the Edward Waters College Football Program, the American Red Cross and to various local events, groups and homes in her community.
Well-regarded for her contributions to the field, Dr. Henry has received multiple awards, including the Skipping Stones Honor Awards and the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, to only name a few. Additionally, she has been recognized as a Marquis Who's Who of American Women and a Marquis Who's Who Top Professional. Dr. Henry was also featured in Millennium Magazine and included in the Marquis Who's Who in America, the Marquis Who's Who in the World and the Marquis Who's Who in American Education publications.
Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Henry is most proud of her ability to pay it forward and effectively contribute to society. Reflecting on a long career, she attributes much of her success to her hard work, her parents, and the village that raised her and taught her to help the underprivileged. Looking toward the future, Dr. Henry aspires to continually impact the lives of young individuals and hopes to volunteer more in her community.
