With more than three decades of excellence in biology education, Dr. Chandra has earned distinction as an Associate Professor of Biology with Norfolk State University. Having been an Assistant Professor of Biology there since 2012, since 2023 he has focused his efforts on teaching microbiology for health sciences, nursing and medicine students and teaching two courses on anatomy and physiology. His background being in reproductive physiology, he is also working on developing research programs to control ovarian function that can lead to understanding ovarian dysfunctions to treat those conditions, with a particular target on polycystic ovary syndrome.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Chandra began his career working with the Central Drug Research Institute in India, focusing on development of an anti-implantation agent to control fertility. He then served as a postdoctoral researcher for the National Institute of Animal Industry in 1998 and for The University of Aberdeen in 1990.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Chandra earned a bachelor's degree in 1981 and a master's degree in zoology in 1984 while living in India. Following these achievements, he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in Reproductive Physiology from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute in Izatnagar, India in 1990, working on cattle embryo transfers and utilizing superovulation to enhance the embryo production. He subsequently gained a post-doctorate degree in reproductive biology from The University of Aberdeen in Scotland in 1991 and another from the National Institute of Animal Health in Tsukuba, Japan in 1998.
Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Chandra is proud to have received a British Council Fellowship in 1990 and a recognition from the Japan Science and Technology Agency in 1996. He is also a valued member of the American Society for Microbiology, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Society for the Study of Reproduction.
Looking to the future, Dr. Chandra intends to further refine his educational resources to facilitate enhanced student comprehension of his biology courses. He also aims to delve deeper into ovarian dysfunction in his research, attempting to reveal unknown facets of ovary function that contribute to disease development.
