Leveraging more than three decades of excellence in the maritime field, Mr. Rittweger has earned distinction as the Regional Claims Director (RCD) with Thomas Miller (Americas) Inc. Since 2019, he has focused his efforts on leading the UK P&I Club claims handling in the Americas region. As such, Mr. Rittweger is responsible for all Club claims in North & South America and he reports directly to the Chief Claims Officer and Regional Director.
Before his present role, Mr. Rittweger was a noted maritime and insurance litigation partner with 27 years' experience in US Federal and State Courts where he successfully developed strategies to defend liability claims, conducted trials and argued appeals. Mr. Rittweger was a partner with Hill, Betts and Nash LLP from 2010 until 2019. He began his legal career as an associate with Donovan Parry Walsh and Repetto in 1992, until he was asked to join Nicoletti Hornig and Sweeney in 1996, becoming a partner in 2002 until 2010. Additionally, Mr. Rittweger is a valued member of the American Bar Association and the Maritime Law Association.
Thomas Rittweger began his maritime career as a nuclear test supervisor for the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics from 1986 to 1989, building and testing nuclear powered Los Angeles class fast attack submarines for the US Navy.
To prepare for his professional journey, Mr. Rittweger earned a Bachelor of Science in marine engineering, with a concentration in nuclear engineering from the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1986. Following this achievement, he was certified as a nuclear test engineer by the US Navy and General Dynamics Nuclear Power School. In 1992, he attained a Juris Doctor from the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University.
Within the coming years, Ms. Rittweger intends to maintain his current position and grow the Club's membership. He is most proud to have litigated some notable cases and helped create new law, including resolving high-profile cases for ship-owning members.
