A seasoned pediatric neurologist with a proven track record of success, Dr. Greenwood leverages his considerable knowledge as a Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina. Driven to improve education in Child Neurology both domestically and internationally. He has taught numerous students at different levels of education from high school to PhDs and Physicians from the United State and from other counties. He has given lectures in Egypt and served as an active member in the International Affairs Committee of the Child Neurology Society. At the local level, Dr. Greenwood has been spearheading efforts to expand telemedicine Child Neurology services at the University of North Carolina and provides education to many residents and medical students.
Over the years, Dr. Greenwood has gained valuable expertise in Child Neurology through his Child Neurology residency and as a Pediatric Instructor and Pediatric Neurology fellow at Washington University's School of Medicine. During the early stages of his career, he also gained valuable expertise in the field as the chief military pediatrician for Walter Reed Medical Center's Andrew Radar Clinic. Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Greenwood earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in neurophysiology from the University of Texas at Austin. Subsequently, he expanded his knowledge by completing an MD at the University of Texas at Galveston.
Dr. Greenwood served as the Chief and Program Director of Child Neurology in the Department of Neurology from 1984-2017 and served on many committees at the University of North Carolina. He has served as a member or chairman on many important national committees that have included the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, The Child Neurology Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Greenwood is a member of the Child Neurology Society, the American Academy of Neurology, the American Medical Association, the American Neurological Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the North Carolina Medical Society, and the Children's Tumor Foundation. Outside of his professional work, he contributes to his community via the Family Support Network and NAMI, as well as at his local church, through which he has remained dedicated to improving mental health and reducing environmental impacts.
In light of his outstanding body of work, Dr. Greenwood has been recognized many times, earning the United Cerebral Palsy Clinical Fellowship in Pediatric Neurology, an Army Commendation Medal, the North Carolina Volunteer of the Year Award, and the Teacher Investigator Award from the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke. More recently, Dr. Greenwood was honored with the Roger and Mary Brumback Lifetime Achievement Award from the Child Neurology Society and several teaching awards from the University of North Carolina.
While his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Greenwood takes the most pride in his research in neurofibromatosis type1 (NF1), which showed that NF1 causes significant overgrowth in the brain due to gray and white matter abnormalities and a diffusion-weighted abnormality that leads to cognitive deficits. In previous research with the Rat model of epilepsy, he showed the long-standing changes in neuroendocrine function caused by kindled seizures. He could block epileptogenesis and prevent seizures by using messenger RNA to block a metabotropic glutamate subunit, GluR1. He is also involved in genetic studies of neurologic disorders in Children. He has collaborated in the studies that led to approval of many different medications for seizures and the treatment of tumors in neurofibromatosis. The cornerstone of his success lies in his wife's support and understanding. Looking ahead, Dr. Greenwood intends to further his work in international child neurology education and training by traveling to other countries and providing services and increasing the accessibility of child neurology services.
