Prior to these roles, he was a principal investigator at San Diego Research from 1996 to 2004 and an assistant professor at San Diego State University from 1990 to 1996. His career is marked by a series of patents that have contributed significantly to the field of medicine, including dipterinyl calcium pentahydrate, pterin antineoplastic agents, and anti-neoplastic compositions and methods.
Dr. Moheno's academic background laid the foundation for his professional achievements. He earned a doctorate in education from the University of California Santa Barbara in 1985 after completing coursework in philosophy in biochemistry at the University of California Los Angeles in 1976. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of California Los Angeles, which he received in 1974. Dr. Moheno attributes much of his success to the support and stability provided by his 43-year marriage.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Dr. Moheno is actively involved with La Jolla Religious Society of Friends and the American Friends Service Committee. His engagement with these organizations reflects his commitment to community service. Moreover, Dr. Moheno has been recognized with three prestigious awards for his contributions to science and education.
Dr. Moheno began his career at the Salk Institute in 1972, working under Dr. Tom Shier before completing his doctorate and contributing to the Junior Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement program at California State University Bakersfield. His research has spanned virology, folic acid metabolism, and cancer cells, leading to significant advancements including the invention of immuno-therapeutic drugs targeting various diseases such as cancer and tuberculosis. In recognition of his work with the MESA Program, he received an Achievements in Science and Education award in 1987. Dr. Moheno is also known for inventing drugs like calcium pterin (CaPterin), dipterinyl calcium pentahydrate (DCP), and ImmunoPterin (IP). He is a proud father of two children, Karla and Daniel, and enjoys spending time with family and friends as well as traveling.
