While working toward his law degree, he gained experience in the legal profession at his father's, James P Miller, Sr.'s, law firm. He thereafter embarked to focus on sports law and civil litigation.
Since 1997, Mr. Miller has worked as a National Football League Player's Association certified contract advisor, representing hundreds of professional football players with the National Football League as a licensed agent in addition to a number of other athletes and coaches in various sports involving multiple aspects of their careers. In 1997, he established the Law Offices of JP Miller Jr., where he has since practiced civil litigation, including personal injury, real estate law, contract law, and family law litigation which includes divorce, child custody and all financial aspects of a marital dissolution. Beginning in 2020, he earned a spot as one of the top 16 exceptional attorneys practicing in the South County, Chula Vista Courthouse, and as one of the top 17 divorce attorneys in the East County, El Cajon Courthouse, by Expertise. Furthermore, in 2021, Mr. Miller was included by Expertise as one of the top family law attorneys in North San Diego County, Vista Courthouse. He has received all three recognitions from Expertise in 2022 and 2023.
Mr. Miller has been nominated to Super Lawyers multiple times in his career. Additionally, in 2010 and 2012, he was a candidate for Superior Court Judge. In running for election, he aimed to apply his broad range of legal and life experience to make a difference in the system and assist the courts. In addition to his deep involvement in the legal sphere, Mr. Miller is an active member of his community. Inspired by his mother, who was a dedicated philanthropist, he found motivation and inspiration to contribute to his community's school, health care, and sports systems.
From 2009 to 2012, Mr. Miller sat on the board of directors for Sharp Grossmont Hospital Foundation, where he helped raise and administer millions of dollars to help fund and sustain the only hospital located in the East County of San Diego. In 2016, he was elected to the Cajon Valley Union School District Board of Trustees and has since served as a board member; vice president of the board, from 2017 to 2022; and president since 2023. In his role on the Board of Trustees, Mr. Miller helped to lead the school district to remain open for students, making Cajon Valley Union the largest public school district in California to apply for, and receive, a California Department of Education waiver to remain operational. He further took the laboring oar with Cajon Valley's Superintendent and the majority of fellow board members to create the "World of Work" curriculum. This program effectively prepares students for career development, which he helped trademark and is now sold to other school districts worldwide.
Additionally, as a result of his love of sports and his professional involvement in that arena, he is a member of the San Diego State Legacy Club for his collegiate athletics career on the track and field team. For going on two decades, he has held a national soccer professional club coaching license and currently coaches with the San Diego Crusaders Soccer Club and a local high school where he specializes in coaching goal keepers. Mr. Miller lead the revival of the sports activities in San Diego County during the pandemic. By adopting the model of the 2020 NBA Bubble, he helped set up geographically secure sporting venues in the East County of San Diego. As a result of his efforts, collaborating with numerous school districts, municipalities, and various local political figures, youth engagement in sports became fully reinstated throughout all of San Diego County.
Finally, Mr. Miller is a founding board member of the San Diego County Gun Owners PAC, the fastest-growing civil rights organization in the state. In all he has accomplished professionally and civically, he attributes his success to both the early exposure and experience he gained as the son of a father who was a foremost family attorney in San Diego County and his own athletic and coaching experiences. Hailing from a family with a legacy in the law, he gained invaluable knowledge and exposure working alongside his father throughout high school, college, and law school; and his prior status as one of the country's top track and field collegiate athletes (javelin), prior to a career-ending injury, instilled in him a competitive ethos that he now applies to his legal practice.
Both Mr. Miller's good fortune as well as his dedication, diligence, and hard work have propelled him to the success he has found today. By continuing to blend his sports agency experience and expansive legal expertise, he continues to set himself apart from other adept lawyers in the Southern California area. Supported by his wife of 20 years and his daughter, he remains driven to continue to make a positive impact in his community and sustain his standing as one of the premier family law attorneys in San Diego County.
