Sgt. Watlington retired from the U.S. Army and has enjoyed a successful career in legal services as the president of MLI Paralegal Services. He has also garnered success as an inventor and founder of MLI Invention Company. As an inventor, Sgt. Watlington has been credited with the concept and design of the Smoke Master, a U.S.-patented chemical weapon that releases non-toxic smoke.
During that time, Sgt. Watlington and his colleague, Felix Batts, traveled to China and signed a joint venture contract with their government as the first African American to visit the Chinese Defense Ministry and conduct a demonstration. Before launching his own companies, Sgt. Watlington worked for Mill Coats Bennett patent law firm focusing on patents; he did the drafting for them. After nearly a decade in the industry, he pivoted to form his own establishment.

Sgt. Watlington graduated from high school and Fayetteville Technical Community College before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1969. After graduating at the top of his class during military training, he served to the rank of corporal. During his service, Sgt. Watlington was deployed to Vietnam as a corporal and became wounded. He later re-enlisted and served in Germany.

Sgt. Watlington holds an Associate of Applied Science in commercial, advertising, and design work from Fayetteville Technical Community College since 1991. Well-qualified in the legal sector, he earned a paralegal certificate from Blackstone Career Institute in 2022.

In light of his military service, Sgt. Watlington was decorated with a Purple Heart and Army Commendation Medal Device for Heroism after being wounded in battle in Cambodia in 1969. He also received a Most Technological Advancement Award and an endorsement from his local police department and the U.S. Air Force.
