Though she retired from offering services as a clinical psychologist in 2017, she plans to continue writing, as she sees her writings as a legacy to her family and to others who know her work.
CHICAGO, IL, January 11, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Geraldine K. Piorkowski, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
After receiving a bachelor's degree, Dr. Piorkowski pursued and earned both a master's and doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. After graduating with honors throughout her educational career—including earning a place on the Bronze Honor Tablet at the university—and becoming a licensed psychologist, she has worked in a variety of academic and clinical settings for over 50 years. Besides holding the position of Chair of the Psychology Department and Associate Professor at Roosevelt University, Chicago, she was also on the faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, and the Northwestern Medical School in Chicago. In addition, she was director of the counseling centers at two large, urban universities in Chicago. While in that role, Dr. Piorkowski worked with first-generation college students and established several programs to help them navigate college life.
For the last 20 years of her career, Dr. Piorkowski focused exclusively on her private practice with individual clients and couples, while pursuing an outlet in writing to share her observations, insights, and the professional knowledge gleaned from working with a myriad of clients for over 50 years. She is the author of several books on relationships: "Too Close for Comfort: Exploring the Risks of Intimacy" and "Adult Children of Divorce: Confused Love Seekers," and a book of essays, "Beyond Pipe Dreams and Platitudes: Insights on Love, Luck and Narcissism from a Longtime Psychologist," that she wrote after her retirement. The latter book focused on the psychological realities she discovered in her clinical work that run counter to popular culture. In addition, over the last two years, she has been a regular blog contributor to PSYCHOLOGY TODAY's online website on a variety of topics, ranging from the negative effects of texting to the positive effects of gratitude.
Along with being an accomplished psychologist and author, Dr. Piorkowski served as the chair of the clinical section of the Illinois Psychological Association and has been a member of the American Psychological Association and the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, where she is currently a Board member. She has also been a volunteer at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, a not-for-profit, nationally ranked physical medicine and rehabilitation hospital, and has been active in domestic violence prevention work in the Chicago area.
In reflecting on her career overall, Dr. Piorkowski attributes her success to the unwavering support she received from her husband of 65 years, Frank M. Piorkowski, and the academic communities she was a part of. Moreover, she feels gifted in having a flair for writing, a determination to succeed, and a commitment to her word, all of which have been helpful in her success. Though she retired from offering services as a clinical psychologist in 2017, she plans to continue writing, as she sees her writings as a legacy to her family and to others who know her work.
