With more than two decades of excellence in ecology, environment and forestry, Mr. Mitchell has earned distinction as an ecologist with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Since 2009, he has focused his efforts on handling endangered species recovery and listings. His goal is to stop these species from continuing down the road to extinction and see them recover to the point where they no longer need legal protection.
Before his current role, Mr. Mitchell served as a district wildlife biologist for the District 1 Florida State Parks Service in 1997. To prepare for his career, he earned a bachelor's degree in wildlife science from Auburn University in 1993 and gained a PDI open water diver certification.
Among his professional accomplishments, Mr. Mitchell has received numerous performance awards and was nominated for Conversation Scientist of the Year. He is most proud to have developed a prescribed fire program, which focuses on using controlled fires to benefit endangered species by correcting their habitat.
Looking to the future, Mr. Mitchell is working towards conserving flatwood salamanders, which are down about 96% from their original population levels. He also will continue contributing to the effort convincing the world that global climate change is a legitimate and present threat.
