Dr. Fisher is an experienced board member affiliated with the global environmental nonprofit, The Nature Conservancy, in New Mexico. She has served as a board of trustees member since 2019. Additionally, Dr. Fisher has been the chair of the International Society for Third Sector Research since 2015.
As an expert in socio-economic development, specifically regarding politics, Dr. Fisher volunteered her time with Brand New Congress from 2016 to 2018. She was also a board member for the World Affairs Council of Maine and, among other roles, was a program officer for the Kettering Foundation, researching deliberative democracy. As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Fisher has published over 30 scholarly journal articles and has garnered close to 700 citations. She also published three books on non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including "Importing Democracy: The Role of NGOs in South Africa, Tajikistan, and Argentina" via Kettering Foundation Press in 2013. This book took seven years to complete and required extensive travel abroad, conducting over 100 interviews with various NGOs involved in democratization. Dr. Fisher's other two books include "The Road from Rio: Sustainable Development and the Nongovernmental Movement in the Third World" via Praeger in 199 and "Nongovernments: NGOs and the Political Development of the Third World" via Kumarian in 1997.
Civically active, Dr. Fisher has served as the president of the Connecticut State Ethics Commission in Hartford. She was also the president of school volunteers in New Haven, Connecticut. More recently, Dr. Fisher has been actively participating with the Blue CD2 New Mexico.
Dr. Fisher studied at Pomona College, where she was elected into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in international relations, magna cum laude, in 1963. She subsequently received a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in international studies with a focus in political science from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in 1977. As part of her continued professional commitments, Dr. Fisher is a member of the International Society for Third Sector Research.
Dr. Fisher attributes her persistence and unconventional approach to her success. She also credits her father's influence on her intellectual development. Although she still has more work left, she hopes to be remembered as someone who fought for democracy.
