Leveraging more than two decades of excellence in emergency medicine, Dr. O'Mara has earned distinction as an Associate Professor for the Creighton University School of Medicine. Since 2002 he has focused his efforts on caring for patients while also engaging in telemedicine to help individuals nationwide. He has served as a liaison to the Department of Radiology to ensure they were working collaboratively and effectively. Likewise dedicated to civil advocacy, he volunteers with the Saint Vincent de Paul free clinic for the homeless and indigent population.
Prior to his present role, Dr. O'Mara worked as a Senior Scientist at NASA/Ames Research Center where he played a vital role in the success of the Spacelab Life Sciences missions, receiving multiple awards from NASA and from the Astronaut Crew of the SLS-2 mission in 1992. He was nominated to serve as the Payload Specialist on the SLS-2 mission by 3 Principal Investigators and the NASA Space Life Sciences Payloads Office. He also served honorably in the United States Air Force as a Flight Surgeon, flying an F-16 and becoming certified in Critical Care Air Transport.
Dr. O'Mara earned his Medical Degree from the Medical College of Ohio in 1999 and completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at the prestigious Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He has spent the last 25 years practicing medicine at Level 1 Trauma Centers including The Toledo Hospital, Tampa General Hospital, and currently at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in the Barrow Emergency Center. Dr. O'Mara was admitted as a Fellow in the American College of Emergency Physicians and received a Top Doctor Award from Phoenix Magazine in 2020.
To prepare for his medical career, Dr. O'Mara earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Notre Dame in 1976 and a Master of Science in Cellular Physiology from the University of Miami in 1982.
Within the coming years, Dr. O'Mara intends to continue his work as a medical professional, having achieved a great deal during the course of his career. Well-qualified in his field, he is a Board Certified Emergency Medicine physician and presently holds seven different state licenses to practice medicine.
