After starting in the industry as an aerospace engineer, Dr. Barker became a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he later received a tenured position. Over the years, the desire to pursue medical school grew until he left his teaching position to complete his MD at the University of Miami. Subsequently, he completed a residency in anesthesiology back home in California before being recruited to the University of California, Irvine in 1984. Six years later, Dr. Barker became chairman, a role he maintained for many years prior to retiring from the role.
Throughout his career, Dr. Barker has gained valuable academic expertise as the professor and head of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Arizona. Since obtaining an emeritus role at the University in 2013, he has leveraged his expertise with Masimo Corporation as its chief science officer. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Barker maintains affiliations with the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Technology in Anesthesia, the Patient Safety Movement Foundation, the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, and several others.
An expert in his field, Dr. Barker holds numerous degrees besides his MD, having earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from Harvey Mudd College, a Master of Science in engineering science from the California Institute of Technology, and a PhD in engineering from Caltech.
Outside of his work, Dr. Barker contributes to his community through the Patient Safety Movement Foundation, Toys for Tots, Tunnels to Towers, and the American Cancer Society. In light of his professional achievements, he won the J.S. Gravenstein Award from the Society for Technology in Anesthesia and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Innovations and Applications of Monitoring of Perfusion, Oxygenation, and Ventilation.
