Mr. Avila was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, where he majored in Economics at Universidade Mackenzie and received his postgraduate degree in marketing from Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing. In his early career in Brazil, Mr. Avila worked for Arthur Andersen Consulting, before joining the Brazilian conglomerate Alpargatas as marketing manager for the flip flops brand Havaianas. After acquiring such great business experience in Brazil, Mr. Avila moved to Cambridge, MA, USA to attend Harvard University. After completing a one-year graduate program in administration and management, he moved back to Brazil and joined the French company BIC as Marketing Manager for South America. It did not take long for Carlos' business acumen to propel him to New York to assume the global marketing responsibility for the shaving division at BIC International. He was later invited to become the Marketing Director for all business units in Latin America, based in the U.S. Carlos became a U.S. citizen in the early 2010s.
After a few years working with Latin America, Mr. Avila was promoted to Vice-President of Marketing for the developing markets division. In this role, Carlos became responsible for all product categories (stationery products, pocket and utility lighters, and wet shave products for Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Oceania). "It was a phenomenal experience to work with people from different cultures from all around the world, while still being based in the U.S. This role required me to travel 60-70% of the time, but all the knowledge and experience I've gained were worth the effort. I'm proud to have worked "boots on the ground" in more than 70 countries across all continents."
After such rich experience, Mr. Avila spent the last five years of his career at BIC as the Vice-President of Marketing and Business Development for the lighters division, the most profitable business unit for Société BIC. During this period, he oversaw the Americas, with a strong focus on North America. Though based in the U.S., he reported directly to the HQ in France.
After parting ways with BIC in 2020, Carlos took a 6-month sabbatical period to dedicate time to family, before embarking on new challenges as Sr. Vice President of Marketing in the PPE – Personal Protective Equipment industry, followed by a position of Head of Marketing and Business Development in a boutique construction management company.
Nevertheless, Mr. Avila's passion for high-volume, fast-moving consumer goods brought him back to the industry. Carlos has recently joined Flamagas / Clipper as Country Director, USA & Canada. Since 1972, Clipper, the world's #1 reusable lighter, has provided the full solution for reusability of plastic. Flamagas is part of Corporation Exea Empresarial, a multi-billion-dollar family-owned Spanish conglomerate.
