Ms. Deem is an experienced and respected environmental specialist. In preparation for her career in the field, Ms. Deem earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1998 and a master's degree in environmental engineering from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2002.
Ms. Deem began her career in Anchorage, Alaska, as an environmental consultant with Ecology and Environment Inc. in 2002. There, she assisted various clients with environmental compliance and cleanup activities. Ms. Deem subsequently joined Aircraft Service International Group as the environmental manager between 2005 and 2017, where she was able to represent the airline industry on many issues to include tank expansions, pipeline realignment, fuel hydrant system expansions, as well as managing the federal, state, and local environmental compliance, training, drills, reporting, and audits for said systems. Ms. Deem also played a critical role for the consortium of airlines operating at Anchorage International Airport assessing storage needs and fuel imports to the Cook Inlet that support the necessary supply needs.
During this time, Ms. Deem was also elected to serve two six-year terms on the board of directors for Chadux, a spill response organization vital to the fuel industry in the Cook Inlet and western Alaska.
In furtherance of supporting the airline consortium in maintaining a secure fuel supply during uncertain times, Ms. Deem served as a project engineer for Geosyntec Consultants in 2017 and as then vice president for Global Fuel LLC from 2017 to 2020.
Ms. Deem joined McKnight & Associates Inc. in Nome, Alaska, in 2020. With McKnight & Associates she provided expertise in environmental permitting and documentation for transportation planning and projects, and necessary upgrades and new buildings for HeadStart and public safety officers in rural native villages. Ms. Deem also assisted Bering Strait communities in identifying and mitigating hazardous conditions such as flooding, erosion, and permafrost thaw. As Ms. Deem's contract with McKnight & Associates ends, she is preparing to return to a similar field or continue working in the Alaska market.
A leader in the industry for over two decades, she is an expert in environmental compliance, despite facing extensive pushback throughout her career in what is considered a very male-dominated field. Ms. Deem draws a deep sense of satisfaction in her work, knowing that she has made many improvements in prevention initiatives, and economic remediation solutions that are suited to Alaska's distinctive geographic area and ecosystems.
Through various initiatives, Ms. Deem enjoys volunteering and donating to worthy causes, including Food Bank Alaska. She also contributes to local news by donating to Alaska Public Media and a subscription to the Nome Nugget.
Remaining actively engaged with professional organizations relevant to her industry, Ms. Deem is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Anchorage Chapter.
