After over 18 years of success in law, Ms. Sims pivoted into higher education. She joined South Georgia State College in 2000, becoming an assistant professor, and then joined Georgia Highlands College in Rome, Georgia in 2008 becoming a tenured associate professor of political science while working on an additional degree. In 2015, Ms. Sims returned to South Georgia State College and became a tenured full professor in the department of social sciences. Over the years she has taught various courses including courses on American Government, Comparative Politics, International Relations, and Constitutional Law. She led a student trip to Europe to study politics there, attended a conference on federalism in Scotland prior to the Scottish referendum vote on whether to leave the United Kingdom, and took students to Washington, D. C., and wrote her Master's Thesis at Georgia State University in 2018 on International Law and Peace. Among other services to her institution, she has served as the elected President of the South Georgia State College Faculty Assembly. She is admitted to the Bar of the United States Supreme Court and to all federal and state courts in Georgia, and served as a representative for Solicitors in Georgia on the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of the State of Georgia.
Leveraging her expertise in constitutional law, American government, and international relations, Ms. Sims is an excellent resource for her students. Recognized as a residential state college of the University System of Georgia, South Georgia State College notably offers associate degrees in 20 different programs. Having begun her career as a judicial law clerk for the Waycross Judicial Circuit in Douglas in 1982, shortly after garnering her law degree, Ms. Sims transitioned into the role of an assistant district attorney for the circuit between 1983 and 1984, prosecuting felonies and misdemeanors in the superior courts and becoming the first woman to do so in that judicial circuit. Transitioning into the private sector, she became the sole proprietor of her firm, Rebecca L. Sims, Attorney at Law, in Douglas, from 1985 to 1996, becoming Georgia State Court Solicitor, a role she was elected to for two four-year terms between 1989 and 1996. During her tenure, she led that office to become independently located in the Courthouse and staffed with permanent staff. During her tenure, Ms. Sims also served as a legal counsel for Georgia State Representative Chuck Sims from 1996 to 2008.
Ms. Sims received a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government, cum laude, from the University of the South in 1979, a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Baylor University in 1981, a Master of Public Administration from Valdosta State University in 2002, and a Master of Arts in political science from Georgia State University in 2018. Remaining aware of developments in her field, she is an active member of the American Political Science Association and the International Studies Association.
