Deep industry experience has shaped Ms. Gioia's approach to her current roles. She joined the audit staff at Laventhol and Horwath in 1981 and after earning the designation of certified public accountant progressed to the rank of audit manager with the international firm. In 1989, she was named audit manager, an appointment in which she excelled through 1990. Ms. Gioia began working independently in 1990, while thriving in concurrent roles as a contract discussion leader with the Foundation for Accounting Education from 1993 to 1997 and as a contract trainer with the Pew Charitable Trust between 1995 and 1997.
Exceptional academic achievement further defines Ms. Gioia's profile and includes a Bachelor of Arts in accounting from Avila College, now known as Avila University. She also completed a Master of Public Administration in nonprofit management from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Notably, she has extended her focus on higher education to work in academia, joining the adjunct faculty for graduate programs at Eastern University from 1993 to 1997. Ms. Gioia was also humbled to serve as a senior fellow and teacher with the Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership at the University of Missouri, Kansas City for 12 years.
Numerous accolades have marked the milestones of Ms. Gioia's career thus far, including being named to the Pi Alpha Alpha National Honor Society for Public Affairs and Administration and the Phi Kappa Phi National All-Discipline Honor Society. In 1981, she was awarded the Student Achievement Award from The Wall Street Journal. Notably, in 1992, Ms. Gioia also was recognized as the Community Accountants Volunteer of the Year and won the Volunteer Achievement Award for Accountants for the Public Interest as well as the Small Business Administration Accountant Advocate of the Year. In 2022, Ms. Gioia was awarded the Ingram's Local Hero Award.
A commitment to service is a key component of Ms. Gioia's professional presence. From 1989 to 1993, she held a seat on the board of directors of the American Society of Women Accountants, and she served as the chair of the Eastern Region Membership At Large Committee of the American Women's Society of Certified Public Accountants. She also accepted an appointment to the Board of Counselors at Avila University and capably served as treasurer for the Women's Employment Network from 2000 to 2003 and served as treasurer for the Women's Foundation, now known as United WE from 2009 to 2011. Furthermore, Ms. Gioia has maintained membership in prominent associations including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Missouri Society of CPAs.
Ms. Gioia attributes her success to her parents' positive influence as role models and credits both her high school and university teachers and her CPA managers for their roles in her success as well. Additionally, she cites the productive advice and encouragement of her mentors for the impact they have made on her career. Looking toward the future, Ms. Gioia remains enthusiastic about serving her community through partnerships with nonprofits and making meaningful contributions to the region.
