With more than two decades of excellence in education as a specialist in community and economic development at the state and county level, Dr. Lane has earned distinction as an associate professor and state specialist for Washington State University (WSU) Extension. Since 2020, he has focused efforts on assisting tribes and rural communities in navigating complex barriers with a multidisciplinary approach. Dr. Lane is well known for addressing a wide range of issues including food, energy, regenerative agriculture, and technology to achieve community and economic development. He respects and understands sovereignty to collaborate with the tribes in Eastern Washington like the Colville Confederates Tribes that spans two counties in Ferry and Okanogan County, Washington, developing the nation's first formal tribal and rural agreement to establish a Broadband Action Team (known as a BAT). Dr. Lane is driven by a strong commitment to practical solutions to resolve complex challenges through his extensive experience and knowledge. Additionally, he has served on a variety of boards like the Washington Festival & Events Association (WFEA) establishing a microcredential program to certify event producers, as well as helping nonprofits and economic development centers like the North Central Washington Economic Development District (NCWEDD) where the team won a state award in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Before his present role, Dr. Lane served honorably as a Seabee in the United States Navy and Navy Reserves from 1991 until 1999. During this time, he also served as an office manager and clerk for Tom C. Lane, Sr. & Associates from 1996 until 2012. He was the founder of the Outlaw Entertainment Group with a lifelong friend from 1999 until 2012. Additionally, he served as the founder and producer for the Backwoods Music & Camping Festival from 2007 until 2012 and worked in student recruitment services for Tulsa Community College from 2001 until 2013 before joining WSU, an international R1 Carnegie research institution of higher learning. He began his time with WSU Extension and subsequently served as an assistant professor and county director in Ferry County for Washington State University in 2014 before being promoted to associate professor in 2020.
Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Lane has been honored with several national, regional, and state awards. Dr. Lane is also recognized by colleagues for his team's contributions to the National Governors Association (NGA) and Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) as a passionate voice for microcredentials, impacting education reform and economic development. He is the past chapter president and vice president of a valued international education fraternity Phi Delta Kappa helping increase membership for the local chapter.
Learning to learn and life learning is important to Dr. Lane. Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Lane began as a certified mechanic in the US Navy, leveraged technical education to attend a community college, and ultimately earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Drake University in 1996, a private institution. Following this achievement, he attained a Master of Science in educational leadership from Oklahoma State University in 2007, a land grant university like WSU. He subsequently gained a Doctor of Education in organizational change and leadership from the University of Southern California in 2018. His mantra is: Learn. Serve. Lead.
Within the coming years, Dr. Lane intends to maintain his university affiliation, cherishing the fulfilling work and close-knit relationships with colleagues that make the university feel like an extended family. He also plans to expand the family business to teach his son how to be an entrepreneur, while offering a broad spectrum of services. As the product of first generation college graduates that worked years to attain to their professional degrees while raising a family, Dr. Lane is also a dedicated single father of a Cherokee citizen. His entire journey serves as a powerful model for his son, demonstrating that with hard work and persistence, one can overcome challenges and achieve anything.
