After earning a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy through the Great Books program at St. John's College and serving in the U.S. Navy Reserve for nearly a decade, Dr. Kopar pursued a career path in medicine, sparked by research she did in her undergraduate studies. She obtained her pre-medicine credentials and received a scholarship to attend Emory University, where she graduated with a Doctor of Medicine in 2007. While at Emory, Dr. Kopar developed a passion for surgery and completed a general surgery residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock before taking a three-year break to explore ways in which she could merge her interests in philosophy and surgery.
As a result of her interests, Dr. Kopar completed a medical ethics fellowship through Harvard Medical School and committed herself to developing a surgical ethics curriculum. She returned to Dartmouth-Hitchcock to completed a cardiac surgery fellowship and thereafter a trauma and acute surgery fellowship at Yale University in 2018, during which time she taught surgical ethics to residents. Following her impressive list of residencies and fellowships, and as a result of her background and expertise, Dr. Kopar was recruited by Washington University to lead the Surgical Ethics Center and further develop the ethics program that Dr. Ira Kodner started there.

To date, Dr. Kopar cites her most notable achievement as the creation of the ethics fellowship at Washington University and the Center for Humanism and Ethics in Surgical Specialties, where she serves as the director. Along with her responsibilities in her current roles, she continued to further her education as well. In 2023, she earned an Executive Master of Business Administration, and, recently, she started a master's program at Oxford in ethics with the goal of pursing a doctorate degree.
Reflecting on her career thus far, Dr. Kopar cites her migration from her home country of Hungary to the United States as the driving force behind her search for absolutes. When she moved to the U.S. at the age of 17, Dr. Kopar experienced immense culture shock and a significant change in her life. Despite the devastation and changes, the experience equipped her with the ability to adapt to ever-changing situations, and she sought out environments and a career that were a natural fit for her—ultimately leading her to the field of ethics.
In the next five years. Dr. Kopar's main objective is to grow EthiLine, a virtual clinical ethics consultations service, work on integrating ethics education into critical care training, and work nationally around setting standards for what constitutes ethics expertise.
