For over 70 years, Mr. Shuman has been dedicated to teaching and mentoring individuals.
MODESTO, CA, February 05, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James Shuman has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Shuman is the immediate past president of the California Federation of Chaparral Poets Inc., where he served from 2001 to 2007 before accepting the same office again in 2017, stepping into an advisory role in the organization in 2021. In 2018, he became editor of Song of the San Joaquin, a quarterly poetry magazine featuring current work submitted by poets from numerous locations in the U.S. and Europe. In this unique role, Mr. Shuman actively supports accomplished writers through an abiding passion for poetry and identifies and advances opportunities to partner with them in developing their craft.
For over 70 years, Mr. Shuman has been dedicated to teaching and mentoring individuals—inspired in part by his mother's enthusiasm for his talents as a writer while a child—in their pursuit of artistic excellence. Notably, he excelled as an art teacher and instructor of English at Modesto High School from 1966 to 2001; during his tenure, he included a unit of study in reading and writing poetry as a way of forging valuable human connections with his diverse student population, and he gladly accepted the role of yearbook adviser as well, whereby he could combine his artistic skills in design with his writing ability in journalism to guide his students in producing award-winning yearbooks. Mr. Shuman has had considerable experience in administrative capacities, serving as the Telecommunications Coordinator for The California Arts Project (TCAP) from February 1964 to August 1965, and later as the principal of Brethren Heritage School from 2008 to 2016. The specially-funded TCAP position was an attempt to help art, music, dance and drama teachers throughout the state of California become familiar with use of the internet.
After achieving a BA from California State University, Stanislaus, in 1965, and a lifetime teaching credential in 1966, Mr. Shuman earned a Master of Arts in education with a humanities concentration, from CSU Stanislaus in 1972. He accumulated various milestones throughout his long career. While Student Body President, one such event was an invitation to attend the Presidential Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. in 1965. In 1983 he enjoyed the unique opportunity to present his multi-media yearbook sales promotion to a national meeting of yearbook sales representatives of the Taylor Publishing Company in Dallas, Texas. And in 1995 he and a colleague were asked to co-design and present a journalism workshop in Estonia, four years after the country earned its independence, for twenty students and their advisers.
