Backed by years of professional expertise, Mr. Shirley joined Tesla as a senior superintendent in 2020. Through his tenure with the company, he has helped improve operational performance and managed complex projects that have contributed to constructing Gigafactory Texas. Prior to his current role with Tesla, he worked for Bechtel Civil Infrastructure as a civil superintendent, construction coordinator, sub-contract coordinator and senior site superintendent. As a young man Mr. Shirley started as a volunteer firefighter in Prince George's county, MD where he earned several accolades including firefighter of the year. Some of his early positions include making pizzas, driving a taxicab, school bus, dump truck and eventually tractor trailer (Class A CDL). After the birth of his 2 children in the mid to late 90s, he applied for the International Union of Operating Engineers. Highlights of his career working on heavy civil and other mega projects include the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. in 2002, the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge in 2003 to 2005, and the Dulles Metrorail Extension Project in 2014. Also, with Bechtel in 2014, he relocated to Baytown Texas and later that year, Mr. Shirley received a Bechtel Quality Coin as an Earthworks Foreman. In 2018, he also traveled back to the East Coast to the Pennsylvania Shell cracker plant to aide in getting the project back on schedule.
Though hard work and dedication have taken him far in his career, Mr. Shirley credits his success to his mentors, teachers and the people who challenged him over the years. Looking forward, he intends to continue to grow and succeed in his career. Ultimately, Mr. Shirley will continue ensuring projects are completed on time and under budget while working towards eventually running his own division in the future.
