Mr. Martin is a prominent attorney and the owner of his practice, Terrence K. Martin & Associates, in Newport News, Virginia. Having launched his career in 1967, he served as an assistant city attorney for Newport News. He then spent several years as an associate and partner at various local firms, providing counsel to clients throughout all Southeastern Virginia courts and becoming recognized for his work in general practice matters, litigation, personal injury, family law, wills and trusts, corporate and real estate issues, and criminal law. Mr. Martin also garnered extensive expertise working with foreign companies from China.
Drawing inspiration from his father, a successful attorney who represented insurance companies and passed away two months before graduating from law school, Mr. Martin has always strived to follow in his footsteps. Among many attributes he learned from him, he seeks to maintain a high level of ethics in the workplace and respect within his community.
In addition to his commitments at his firm, Mr. Martin was a city councilman from 1990 to 2002. He is also a past president of the Kiwanis Club of the Peninsula at Oyster Point and the Newport News Sister Cities Corporation and served in various other roles for the Virginia Living Museum, the National League of Cities, the Virginia Peninsula Economic Development Council, and the Virginia Municipal League. Today, Mr. Martin has played Santa Claus for over a decade, visiting sick children at the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters during the holidays. He has also been affiliated with Blue Skies Gallery in Hamptons, Virginia, where some of his artwork has been displayed.
Mr. Martin graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts in English language and literature and from the University of Virginia in 1964 with a Doctor of Jurisprudence. He was also admitted to practice by the Virginia State Bar in 1964. Before entering the workforce, Mr. Martin enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1965, serving as captain in the Military Police Corps until 1967.
