Dr. Kolekar is a genomic data scientist with over seven years of industry and academic experience in application and development of methods for next-generation sequencing and data analysis. His passion for science was evident in his early school days, which led him to pursue an educational and career path in the sciences. In 2007, he earned a Bachelor of Science in biotechnology from Vidya Pratishthan's School of Biotechnology and soon after pursued a Master of Science in bioinformatics from the Bioinformatics Centre at the University of Pune.
Following his master's degree, Dr. Kolekar taught as an internal teacher at his master's alma mater, a position he held throughout completing his junior research fellowship and thereafter his doctoral research, which he completed in 2015 along with earning a Doctor of Philosophy in bioinformatics and continuing to teach as a visiting faculty member. Following his doctorate, Dr. Kolekar started as a bioinformatics engineer at Strand Life Sciences, where he contributed for several years, eventually graduating into the role of senior bioinformatics engineer. In 2016, he was recognized for his research contributions, receiving the award for the best paper at the 15th International Conference on Bioinformatics. After his time at Stand Life Sciences, he joined Thermo Fisher Scientific as a software engineer and thereafter moved to the United States to work at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as a staff bioinformatics research scientist.
While in his initial position at St. Jude, Dr. Kolekar completed an Executive Master of Business Administration through thePower. Since joining the hospital, he has made impactful strides in the battle against childhood cancer. He considers his work, particularly his two groundbreaking studies published in 2022, as his most noteworthy contributes to St. Jude as they offer new avenues for early detection and treatment of leukemia and myeloma. Now, Dr. Kolekar holds the title of senior bioinformatics research scientist, a position in which he is currently carrying out research on acute myeloid leukemia in Down's Syndrome.
In his present role, Dr. Kolekar collaborates with fellow scientists, physicians, and pathologists to discuss patients' cases and delve into the molecular details of these cancers of note to identify markers for targeted therapies in patients with those conditions, among his other laboratory and research responsibilities. In all he has achieved, he attributes his success to the mission of the hospital, which is to advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Such an honorable mission serves as Dr. Kolekar's primary motivation for his work.
As a result of his involvement in the field, Dr. Kolekar holds membership with the American Association for Cancer Research and the International Society for Computational Biology, where he was a former member of the society's Educational and Internship Committee through which he helped provide fellowship opportunities for aspiring scientists to attend conferences and assisted laboratories in finding suitable internship candidates for their facilities. Looking forward, he plans to remain committed to advancing the mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, with a focus on developing treatments for certain cancers.
Driven to expand his contributions, Dr. Kolekar aims to identify markers that can improve clinical trials and provide valuable insights into the treatment of the different cancers.
