A seasoned attorney with years of expertise in intellectual property law, Mr. Lackert acts as Deputy General Counsel for the World Trade Centers Association, overseeing brand protection initiatives, monitoring license agreements, and working on global domain name issues. Similarly, he leverages his passion for outer space law to author articles and speak on the need for a legal framework in space with a specific focus on outer space intellectual property rights. Before starting his current role, Mr. Lackert was an intellectual property partner in such law firms as King & Spalding and Reed Smith.
During the early stages of his life, Mr. Lackert grew up in the metropolitan New York area and excelled in his high school studies, winning awards in English, Chemistry, and Russian. He was the only one in his family to go to college at that time. He earned his Bachelor of Arts (AB) cum laude in political philosophy with an emphasis in governmental studies from Cornell University. Subsequently, Mr. Lackert received a Juris Doctor (JD) from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law and a Master of Laws (LLM) in Trade Regulation from New York University School of Law.
Throughout his career, Mr. Lackert has been active in implementing the World Trade Organization TRIPS Agreement, the agreement on trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights, including assisting the U.S. Department of State by fulfilling educational assignments in several countries, including Jordan and Jamaica. He has also led the Trademark Division and, separately, the Copyright Division of the IP Section of the American Bar Association (ABA), has been on the Board of Directors of the International Trademark Association (INTA), has chaired seven INTA committees, and served as the President of the U.S. Group of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI). He has also worked as a domain name UDRP arbitrator for WIPO in Switzerland with over 80 reported decisions and has spoken on intellectual property issues in the WIPO and the WTO, at numerous law schools including Yale, NYU, and USC, on podcasts, and before professional meetings, all on six continents. Moreover, he has authored scores of articles on his chosen subject.
Outside of his daily work, he has done pro bono legal work with startups on protecting their designs and brands, served on the Board of Directors and as Secretary of a disaster relief organization coming out of 9/11, and provided assistance at crisis shelters for victims of Hurricane Katrina and the Pisco, Peru earthquake.
In light of his professional achievements, Mr. Lackert received the 2023 INTA Service Award for his contributions to pioneering a framework for outer space intellectual property law. Additionally, he was named a New York Super Lawyer 12 times, and honored as one of the Best Lawyers in America. He was recognized as one of the Global Top 25 Trademark Lawyers by the International Who's Who of Trademark Lawyers. Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in the industry, he credits his success to his work as an author and committee chair, as a public speaker, and from his drive to further his professional knowledge.
