Leveraging nearly two decades of excellence in the regulation of nuclear power reactors and fuel cycle facilities, Mr. Bonanno has earned distinction as the deputy general counsel for the Nuclear Energy Institute. Since 2022, he has focused his efforts on handling nuclear regulatory issues, including issues related to emergency planning, physical security, low-level radioactive waste and used fuel management, operational safety requirements, as well as administrative and environmental law. He also participates in appellate litigation when necessary. Additionally, he lends his expertise as the chair for the nuclear law committee for the American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy and Resources and is a vice chair of the nuclear energy committee for the American Bar Association Section of Infrastructure and Regulated Industries.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Bonanno began his career as a manager of environmental operations for Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in 1997 and became an environmental health and radiation safety specialist for Bristol-Myers Squibb in 2000. Following this period, he was a consulting health physicist for Yale University in 2001 and took a role as an attorney with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 2005. In 2008, he joined the Nuclear Energy Institute as an assistant general counsel, earning a promotion to the senior director of regulatory affairs and associate general counsel in 2018.
To prepare for his career, Mr. Bonanno earned a Bachelor of Science in environmental sciences, with honors, from Rutgers University in 1997. Following this achievement, he attained a Master of Public Health in environmental health from the same institution in 2000. He subsequently gained a Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from the Seton Hall University School of Law in 2005. Upon graduation, Mr. Bonanno was made a member of the Seton Hall Chapter of the Order of the Coif.
Outside of work, Mr. Bonanno serves on the City of Brunswick's Planning and Finance & Utility Commissions. He has also served on the City's Ethics Commission.
In the coming years, Mr. Bonanno intends to focus on mentoring and sharing his expertise in nuclear regulation. He has gained a wealth of skill in navigating complex and challenging regulatory and policy issues of national importance, and has honed the ability to work effectively with a wide variety of professional disciplines, including attorneys, engineers, scientists, and communicators.
