Driven to pursue a career in family therapy but unsure of how to begin, Mr. Nelson began working as a lead at Gap while completing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with Sexual Identity Concentration from Georgia State University. Subsequently, he became the Assistant Manager and Assistant General Manager at Gap before becoming the Co-manager of Ann, Inc., the parent company of Ann Taylor, Loft, Lou & Grey. Over the years, Mr. Nelson expanded his leadership skills as the Store Manager for SalonCentric, a subsidiary of L'Oreal USA.
Throughout his retail leadership career, Mr. Nelson remained intent on becoming a therapist and finally realized his dream in 2023, becoming a marriage and family therapy intern for Family First Therapy, LLC, where he specializes in psychotherapy, career counseling, adolescent therapy, narrative therapy, and more. To remain abreast of changes in the field, he aligns himself with several industry organizations, including the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. In conjunction with his work, Mr. Nelson also contributed to his community as the store volunteer coordinator for Girls on the Run and Fallen Firefighters.
In light of his professional achievements, Mr. Nelson won the Blue Box Award from Gap, Inc. in 2015 and was named Pride Store of the South Region by SalonCentric in 2021. While his career has been filled with standout moments, he takes the most pride in facilitating group therapies to fulfill his internship hours. In the coming years, Mr. Nelson intends to obtain his license, complete his master's degree in marriage and family therapy/counseling at Touro University, establish a private practice, and publish a book.
