Mr. Hearns is distinguished for his success and contributions as a mitigation specialist for the Federal Public Defender of the Western District of Michigan. Working closely with six different attorneys, he focuses on conducting research and identifying mitigating factors for individuals who are either standing trial or have pled guilty and are now facing sentencing.
Grateful for his most recent position, Mr. Hearns enjoys his responsibilities and believes that although people may commit wrongful acts, it does not necessarily classify them as reprehensible or malevolent. Looking toward future success, he is committed to expanding the pool of interns in West Michigan to enhance the social work field. Mr. Hearns is actively pursuing transitioning into a managerial role where he can lead a team of professionals. He also anticipates that his caseloads will expand as he becomes more efficient in his position, furthering his impact on the community.
In addition to his fieldwork, Mr. Hearns became an adjunct professor of developmental psychology at Grace Christian University in 2020. Although it was a profession that he never envisioned himself doing, he has found great reward in teaching.
Before being recruited by the Federal Public Defender, Mr. Hearns was a mediator for the Friend of The Court from 2020 to 2022 and a clinical therapist at Impact Counseling and Consulting between 2013 and 2022. He began his career in the industry over a decade ago as a clinical program supervisor at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services in 2011.
Actively volunteering in his community, Mr. Hearns lends his time at various treatment centers. Additionally, Mr. Hearns coaches a basketball team of young adults and mentors several of them.
Mr. Hearns graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in psychology. He also earned a Master of Arts in counseling psychology from Western Michigan University in 2010. Mr. Hearns received credentials as a licensed professional counselor and nationally certified counselor. Additionally, he holds a specialization in alcohol and drug addiction. As part of his ongoing commitments to the industry, Mr. Hearns is a member of the West Michigan Counseling Association.
Attributing his professional achievements to his faith and tenacity, Mr. Hearns's goal has always been to make his grandmother proud by helping the future generation. His father, uncles, and extended family have also been adamant about remaining on the right path despite potential distractions.
