Ashlee Elizabeth Alicea Lauded for Excellence in First Nations Education

Ashlee Alicea published "Luka and Little Feather" in 2023

Her book tells the story of Indigenous sisters fulfilling a lifelong dream of seeing the ocean.

GREEN BAY, WI, February 19, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ashlee Alicea has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

With a leadership focused degree from the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay, Ms. Alicea established herself as a First Nations educator and children's book author. Her book, "Luka and Little Feather," tells the story of Indigenous sisters fulfilling a lifelong dream of seeing the ocean. Driven by a sense of adventure, the two sisters explore the river near their home and happen upon a yotnʌyátku, or magic stone, that grants them their wish. Through her writing, Ms. Alicea aims to help children tap into their natural curiosity while shedding light on the dynamic languages, cultures, and identities of Native people.

As a First Nations educator, Ms. Alicea aligns herself with the Wisconsin Educators Association and the Wisconsin Indian Education Association to stay abreast of industry changes. Likewise, she advocates for equity in education, particularly Native children in public schools. She is also a strong advocate for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and hopes to use her platform to raise awareness on the many causes that affect First Nations communities.

While her career has been filled with highlights, she takes the most pride in helping children recapture their culture in a place that historically stole that from us… 'school.' Helping educators create a more equitable and inclusive learning experience is part of Ashlee's unwavering drive to help her students find academic acceptance and success.

Though hard work and dedication have brought her far in her career, Ms. Alicea credits her success to being brought up by a strong single mother who stressed the importance of education and self-reliance. Looking toward the future, she intends to create a supplemental curriculum based on the hidden messages in her book. This will give teachers a unique and new way to teach Native American subjects, especially subjects that are rooted in trauma. Ultimately, Ms. Alicea aims to further her education by one day earning a doctoral degree in First Nations studies.
