With more than two decades of excellence in adult healthcare, education and physical therapy, Dr. Dawson has earned distinction as the director of the ALIVE™ Lab @ UCF. Since joining the University of Central Florida in 2015, she has focused her efforts on providing education for her students and clients while conducting research and developing non-pharmacological interventions to improve functional and psychosocial outcomes in older adults with chronic disease, including those with dementia. Through these pursuits, she has made significant contributions to the field of dementia care by introducing a novel rehabilitation, Leveraging Existing Abilities in Dementia (LEAD™), which has been widely recognized for its clinical guidance and has helped elevate the standard of practice for professionals working with individuals with dementia. Additionally, she has served as the owner of Golden Age Consultants since 2022 and has been an associate professor for the University of Central Florida since 2015.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Dawson began her professional journey as a physical therapy aide for NovaCare Rehabilitation in 1996 and continuing as a physical therapist upon licensure in 2002. She continued her career as a physical therapist with Santera Rehabilitation Inc. in 2007 as a Director of Rehabilitation Services and with Sprenger Health Care Systems in 2008. Also dedicated to civil advocacy, she makes regular contributions to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and provides services through the Doctor of Physical Therapy program with the Alzheimer's Association.
Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Dawson was honored with a Teaching Incentive Program Award from the University of Central Florida and was recognized with a Distinguished Educator Award from the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy in 2017. She also received the Margaret L. Moore Outstanding New Academic Faculty Award from the American Physical Therapy Association in 2018.
To prepare for her career, Dr. Dawson earned a Bachelor of Science in sports medicine from Baldwin Wallace University in 1995 and a Master of Physical Therapy from Ohio University in 2002. Following this achievement, she attained a Master of Arts in adult development and aging psychology as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in the same field of study in 2015, both from Cleveland State University. Well-qualified in her field, she is a licensed physical therapist and board-certified clinical specialist emeritus in geriatric physical therapy through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.
Looking to the future, Dr. Dawson intends to continue her growth trajectory, leveraging her knowledge and experience to contribute to the growth and development of her organization's workforce while also disseminating valuable information to support the needs of older adults.
