Building upon a successful 31-year career in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Perry is recognized for his leadership as dean of the College of Military Studies and Leadership at Columbia Southern University. In this position, he leads the preparation, development and direction of academic policy and programs that support military and veteran populations and their families. Among Dr. Perry's priorities are creating degree programs tailored to the expertise of servicemembers and veterans, developing opportunities to equip students for the evolving landscape of military warfare, and ensuring that students acquire the skills and credentials needed to advance national security objectives.
Before joining the leadership team of Columbia Southern University in 2023, Dr. Perry served at the highest levels of the U.S. Air Force, where, as First Sergeant Special Duty Manager, he was responsible for the overall policy, guidance, training and development of more than 2,900 personnel supporting missions around the world. He served as advisor to the 19th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, supporting more than 485,000 service members and their families. Dr. Perry's military career included assignments leading teams in operations, logistics, health care and human resources; his diverse experience included roles as an alcohol and drug abuse counselor and as an inventory management specialist. He has deployed in support of operations in Afghanistan and other overseas contingency operations. His military service saw him awarded the Legion of Merit on three occasions.
Dr. Perry first sought an education at the Community College of the Air Force, earning associate degrees in human resources management, mental health services and logistics. He went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in business management from Wayland Baptist University in 2012 and a Master of Arts in organizational management from Ashford University, now the University of Arizona Global Campus, in 2017. He holds a Doctor of Strategic Leadership degree with a concentration in strategic foresight from Regent University.
As he looks toward the future in his new role, Dr. Perry is excited to contribute to the growth of the College of Military Studies and Leadership at Columbia Southern University. Drawing upon the same vigor he applied to reshape military perspectives on families, he now aims to bring about positive changes for veterans. His focus is on ensuring that enlisted veterans and their spouses comprehend the value of their work; to achieve this, he plans to establish at least five programs designed to expedite the acquisition of credentials, streamlining their transition to civilian life.
Dr. Perry's wife, Melinda, is also a U.S. Air Force veteran; together they have three daughters and one son, ranging in age from 18 to 25. Leaders in their community, the Perrys volunteer for organizations such as Airmen Against Drunk Driving and Airman's Attic, sharing a passion for supporting veterans and individuals facing homelessness. In his free time, Dr. Perry enjoys reading biographies, running, working out, traveling, hiking and volunteering for the veteran community.
