For over two decades, Dr. d'Auvergne has served in the public health sector, providing treatment, care, and support for individuals living with a sexually transmitted infection (STI), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and tuberculosis (TB). To serve these populations in settings with limited sources, in both St. Lucia and the United States, he has focused on implementing donor-funded projects in regional governments. Through his work, Dr. d'Auvergne has gained strong experience in clinical management of HIV, STI, and TB as well as curriculum development, clinical guidelines development, training of clinicians, and mentoring while decentralizing and integrating services into primary care and the criminal justice system.
Prior to working in the public health care field, Dr. d'Auvergne attended Sir Arthur Lewis Community College and went on to accept a full scholarship at Mercy College, where he exhibited leadership as a student athlete and the captain of the tennis team with a 27-9 record—a hobby he has maintained throughout his career, recently receiving his level one tennis coach certification via the United States Tennis Association. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in biology and pre-medicine from Mercy College, he pursued further knowledge and earned a Master of Public Administration in health care administration from Long Island University. He then returned to Saint Lucia to be part of the health sector reform Secretariat which produced the White Paper on Health Sector reform in 2000.
Following his master's, Dr. d'Auvergne attended St. George's University; there, he served as a student organizer, co-founding the St. Lucia medical students' association, and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine in 2004. The vast majority of his career experience and expertise post-doctorate was cultivated in St. Lucia, where he played a large role in expanding the access to resources in the Caribbean for those populations affected by TB, HIV, and STI and ensured sustainable international donor funding for HIV and TB in limited resource settings.
Along with working as an HIV and STI clinical care coordinator, Dr. d'Auvergne held the title of primary care and sexual and reproductive health physician, a position he maintained for nearly 15 years and concurrently held with his subsequent roles. In 2010, he was awarded the TB Fellowship for the Region of the Americas which enables him to work extensively in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In 2011, Dr. d'Auvergne leveraged his expertise in another role within the Ministry of Health: senior medical officer of infectious diseases. Five years later, he became the regional HIV and TB project coordinator for the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission, a position he held up until 2019. During his time in that role, he received recognition for outstanding service and served on the board of the PAN Caribbean Partnership for HIV/AIDS (PANCAP). He further received the Director's Gold Award from St. Lucia's Ministry of Justice for his outstanding services to the Bordelais Correctional Facility; not only did he significantly expand the health care services at the prison by establishing an in-house clinic for HIV/STI patients, but he exhibited unwavering dedication to that population in the prison system, going above and beyond.
In 2020, Dr. d'Auvergne transitioned his efforts to the United States, stepping into the role of Senior TB prevention advisor for CAMRIS. Thereafter, in 2022, he moved to his current position, senior TB prevention advisor, at Credence Management Solutions. As a subject matter expert, he serves on USAID's Global Health team in the TB Division responsible for managing TB/HIV portfolio for countries in Africa and the Caribbean. Coupled with his degrees and field experience, Dr. d'Auvergne consistently prioritized his continuing education by acquiring a variety of credentials.
Dr. d'Auvergne holds a diploma in TB and HIV from PAHO and the World Health Organization (WHO); a certification in infectious diseases from JICA Okinawa, Japan ; and certificates in HIV clinical management, leadership and management, STD and HIV research, and global health from the University of Washington. Most recently, in 2022, he received recognition as an HIV medicine specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine. Within the American Academy of HIV Medicine he is one of the founders of the Academy Black Causes focus on improving education, research, equity , inclusion and social justice for black clinicians, students and persons living and affected by HIV/AIDS. For his involvement in public health and the medical field, and the regions he has served, Dr. d'Auvergne has maintained membership with the St. Lucia Medical and Dental Association since 2006 and is a member of the British Medical Protection Society.
To date, Dr. d'Auvergne cites the most significant impact as successfully controlling the spread of HIV and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in St. Lucia and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, in addition to contributing to the reduction of the stigma surrounding the disease in the Caribbean region. He possesses a strong sense of faith in humanity and cares deeply about the well-being of others. To reach and educate a diverse audience, he has made an effort throughout his career to share public health education through the media using a multi-lingual approach by speaking Creole and English and applying his general working proficiency in Spanish.
As he continues to excel in his career, Dr. d'Auvergne's goal is to positively impact the lives of those affected by HIV and STIs. To do so, he plans to continue furthering his own learning by obtaining certification as a chief medical officer to focus on enhancing global health systems. In all he has accomplished and will go on to pursue, both professionally and civically, Dr. d'Auvergne credits the support of his family and wife, Monica Sturgis, his faith in God, and his strong determination to improve the lives of the underprivileged by providing them with the compassionate care they need.
