With more than three decades of excellence in education and research within health sciences discipline which also includes health law, policy, and ethics, Dr. Ponder has earned distinction as a clinical research professional and has recently invested her talents into the science department as faculty member for ASU Preparatory Academy. Since 2023, she has focused her efforts on providing stellar science education for students within the tuition-free public charter school network. Additionally, she has been a research and education professional with her own company, RPonder, LLC, serving as an independent contractor since 2010 coupled also with numerous projects as a W-2 employee in the overarching realm of the clinical research discipline as early as 1986, monitoring various therapeutic disciplines for contract research organizations and biotech companies in pediatrics, cardiovascular stents, and dermatology, among other fields. She most recently authored "A Protected Class, An Unprotected Condition, and A Biomarker - A Method/Formula for Increased Diversity in Clinical Trials for the African American Subject with Benign Ethnic Neutropenia (BEN)," which was published in the American Journal of Law and Medicine in 2023.
Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Ponder was honored with a Mary Mahoney Nursing Education 2023 Individual Health Award from the AGC Collector's Club of Arizona. In 2015, Dr. Ponder was the key event facilitator as well as moderator for the Arizona first-in-time on-site Henrietta Lacks Family Conference hosted by Gateway Community College. She also was a guest speaker at the 2013 ASU Embracing Change Conference discussing culturally competent clinical trials and presenting her article, "Culturally Competent Clinical Trials - A Continued Commitment to Human Subject Protection." In 1986 she joined the Arizona Cancer Center as Clinical Research Data Manager and became the first African American to grace the cover of the Arizona Health Science Center's, Report on Research journal, 1987-88, Volume 5. She is also a valued member of the Society of Clinical Research Associates and the American Health Lawyers Association.
Before her present role, Dr. Ponder served in various clinical research leadership roles including the director of clinical research for Orthologic in 1994, and a similar role for Regenesis Biomedical, Inc. in 2007. Following this time, she was the interim administrative director for the City of Hope's Institutional Review Board in 2011 until becoming a faculty member for the health sciences division for Maricopa Community Colleges later that year. She continued her career there as the clinical research program director for dual programs in clinical trials in 2012 and eventually took on a role as a clinical research associate for PRA Health Sciences in 2016 just before her post-graduate pursuit in health law. Before embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Ponder earned a Bachelor of Science in Education majoring in educational rehabilitation from the University of Arizona. As an undergraduate, she was instrumental in helping to charter the very first African-American undergraduate sorority in the state of Arizona, the Iota Tau Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Her undergraduate degree is supported by three years of nursing coursework. Following this achievement, she attained an Executive Juris Doctor from Concord Law, which was recently acquired by Purdue Global Law School. She holds a Master of Laws in health law from the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. Well-qualified in her field, she is a certified clinical research professional with the Society of Clinical Research Associates. Looking to the future, Dr. Ponder intends to continue her work on health law, policy, ethics, and the research sciences, including bringing several legal goals to fruition.
