Mr. Skefos is an experienced and sought-after attorney and shareholder affiliated with Martin, Tate, Morrow & Marston PC since 1979, and focuses on economic development, taxation, business transactions, and trusts and estates. Throughout his career, he has garnered extensive expertise in representing clients before local industrial development boards, has represented both creditors and debtors in bankruptcy matters, has counseled clients regarding federal and state tax issues and various types of property tax matters, and has provided a full range of estate planning, estate and trust administration, and conservatorship services.
Mr. Skefos' most notable accomplishments have been in the area of economic development, obtaining significant tax and other incentives from state and local government, thus encouraging companies to locate and expand their business operations in the Memphis area with the attendant creation of thousands of well-paying jobs. Having been involved in over 170 economic development projects for many different clients, he successfully built the economic development practice group at Martin Tate. These projects have notably created over 27,000 jobs and involved approximately $3 billion of capital investment to date.
Mr. Skefos has been active as a member of Kiwanis International and Leadership 100. He has also been with a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Memphis where he has provided his services pro bono and has served on the church's Board of Trustees and as its General Counsel. Moreover, Mr. Skefos has lectured before the Memphis Regional Chamber of Commerce on state and local taxation matters and has been involved with the Mayor's Office of Economic and Resource Development, advising companies interested in establishing their businesses within Memphis and throughout Shelby County on state and local taxation.
In preparation for his career, Mr. Skefos received a Bachelor of Science degree in economics, with honors, from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973, a Master of Science degree in accounting from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1973, and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from George Washington University in 1976. He was admitted to practice by the Tennessee Bar Association, the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, and the Supreme Court of Tennessee in 1976.
