Drawing on 26 years of expertise as an educator, Mr. Horner is recognized for his expertise in the teaching of gifted children. A longtime teacher in District 203 in Naperville, Illinois, he is perhaps best known for his visionary leadership in founding Kid Innovation College, a unique and highly regarded summer learning program specifically designed for advanced children. Mr. Horner is a National Board-Certified teacher whose accolades include his district's Mission Maker Award and multiple nominations for national awards, including Disney's American Teacher Award and Golden Apple Awards. He holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Illinois State University and dual master's degrees in curriculum and instruction, from North Central College, and differentiation and giftedness, from Concordia University.
Mr. Horner embarked on his career in regular fifth-grade classrooms, where he taught for seven years. When a retiring colleague approached him about his interest in teaching a specialized program for gifted students, Mr. Horner was hesitant due to the stigma that surrounded these types of advanced education programs. However, he decided to accept the offer and has been delighted to discover that it was the best professional decision he had ever made.
During his second year of teaching in his district's Project Idea Plus program, Mr. Horner observed that his students lacked challenging educational programs during the summers, and as a result, they found themselves bored and unengaged over the breaks. As a result, he created Kid Innovation College, a summer program designed for gifted children but also open to the broader community. Utilizing his expertise in instruction development, Mr. Horner wrote his own curriculum and hired his own staff to bring his vision to life in 2008.
Despite the reality of educator burnout, Mr. Horner finds constant inspiration in his work; he is particularly known for his strong work ethic and his persistent interest in taking on new challenges. His efforts have paid off with rewards both large and small, from professional recognitions like the Teacher Innovator Award to frequent emails and visits from past students.
Outside of work, Mr. Horner enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He also enjoys reading, playing the piano, and writing poetry with his work published in several magazines across the country. He is the proud founder of a youth soccer program and is active with the Institute for the Habits of Mind.
