Dr. Bourla is the president of Sherman College of Chiropractic in Boiling Springs, South Carolina, a highly regarded institution dedicated to educating and preparing students for careers as doctors of chiropractic since 1973. Since joining the institution in 2022, he has been responsible for overseeing administrative staff and faculty, school policies, and, among other tasks, upholding the school's mission to ensure its principles of true chiropractic are upheld. More importantly, Dr. Bourla is tasked with ensuring that the education and development of future chiropractic doctors significantly impact the communities they serve.
Before his commitments at the college, Dr. Bourla was the owner of a chiropractic practice, Providence Chiropractic Center, since 1997. As an expert in his field, he analyzed and detected the effect of patients' spinal misalignments (vertebral subluxations) on their nervous systems before adjusting their spines and provided patients with regular spinal check-ups to enhance overall well-being.
Dr. Bourla was the dean of clinics at Life Chiropractic College West from 2017 to 2018. He also spent two years as a lecturer of biology at San Francisco State University. Outside of chiropractic, Dr. Bourla was the director of scientific operations at Cetus Corporation, which is recognized as one of the first biotechnology companies. He also owned three local restaurants in the San Francisco area, including DOROS Restaurant.
Dr. Bourla aims to pen a memoir. He hopes his colleagues will reflect on his career and all the hard work he put into helping others. Drawing inspiration from his family, he enjoys serving people in a health-related field and making a difference in their everyday lives.
In preparation for his career, Dr. Bourla received a Bachelor of Arts in cell molecular biology in 1977 and worked on his Master of Science in physiology and behavioral biology in 1980 from San Francisco State University. He later completed a Doctorate of Chiropractic (DC) degree in 1997 from Palmer College of Chiropractic West in San Jose, California, and was selected as valedictorian of his class.
As part of his continued professional commitments, Dr. Bourla was a member of the California Chiropractic Association. He has also been affiliated with the International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations as a board member, three-term president and two-term board chair.
In light of his professional achievements, Dr. Bourla was recognized with a Presidential Award from the California Chiropractic Association in 2011 and 2012 and was named the organization's Doctor of the Year in 2012 and 2013. Moreover, Dr. Bourla received the Service to the Profession Award from the Sherman College of Chiropractic in 2022.
