As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Burgess has been recognized for his expertise as an executive director at The Children's Museum of Memphis-a position he has held since 2019. Located in the heart of the city, the private nonprofit museum offers children the opportunity to explore, imagine, and create while fostering child development via interactive exhibitions and programs. As an expert in early cognitive development and an experienced developmental psychologist, Dr. Burgess thrives in his role and enjoys making a difference in the lives of countless children.
As he progresses in his position, Dr. Burgess envisions improved learning experiences for the children of Memphis. Among many goals, he aims to bring awareness to parents and educators about the importance of learning in the first five years of life. He also has plans to renovate the museum with an eye toward educational underpinnings, engagement, literacy, and STEAM activities. The museum is notably partnering with local groups to provide free family memberships to those with significant needs, a program Dr. Burgess hopes to expand soon.
Before being acquired by The Children's Museum, Dr. Burgess was the director of early childhood at Saint George's Independent School. His years in education have earned him respect and expertise in assisting children to reach their full potential. Dr. Burgess also worked as the Director of Research and Managing Editor for Brilliant Beginnings, a startup company creating child development products, where he co-authored the award-winning book "Toddler Next Steps™." Throughout his career, he has designed dynamic learning spaces including innovation labs, technology labs, and libraries for young and school-aged children.
While in the academic world, Dr. Burgess was part of the most significant study on early childhood language development conducted to date-a project funded by the MacArthur Foundation. Among other accomplishments, Dr. Burgess has been published in highly regarded journals including Developmental Psychology, presented at the most prestigious conferences, and contributed to watershed research on cross-cultural achievement.
Besides his paid position, Dr. Burgess has worked to fundraise for Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Arthritis Foundation. In preparation for his career, he received an undergraduate degree from California State University, Fresno; a master's degree in experimental psychology from California State University, San Diego; and a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology and social behavior from the University of California at Irvine.
As part of Dr. Burgess' continued success, he is a member of several industry-related organizations, including the American Psychology Association, the Society for Research and Child Development, and the American Children's Museum Association.
