Mr. Curtis is a seasoned martial artist and the head instructor and owner of the Virginia Dojo, a premier karate studio in Alexandria, Virginia, that offers adult self-defense classes to men and women. He specializes in teaching Okinawan Shorin Ryu and women's self-defense classes and provides private training sessions and seminars. Dedicated to his craft, Mr. Curtis and his team of instructors focus not only on self-defense but also on self-confidence, fitness, and friendship.

He presently has 18 black belts studying underneath him and looks forward to continually increasing the number of black belts at his school and expanding the student body. Mr. Curtis has practiced martial arts for over 50 years, studying Judo, Karate, and Kung Fu since 1969. He began teaching martial arts in 1982 and is now recognized as a Hanshi, Grand Master, 9th-degree black belt. He is a senior member of Grand Master, 10th Degree, Seikichi Iha's Beikoku Shidokan Karate Association, as well as the International Ryukyu Karate Research Society.
Aside from managing his karate dojo, Mr. Curtis has been the founder and the head of operations for Agriculture Trade and Resource Development Consulting since 2012. His expertise stems from his lengthy career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service between 1982 and 2012 as a foreign service officer promoting US exports and the director of the development resources and disaster assistance division before retiring. He is an active member of the American Foreign Service Association.
During an earlier stage of his career, Mr. Curtis was involved in the Peace Corps from 1975 to 1978 as an agricultural extension agent in rural Paraguay. He subsequently became a project manager and team leader with the Michigan Youth Conservation Corps between 1980 and 1981 before joining USDA.
Mr. Curtis graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in resource development in 1974, a bachelor's degree in public affairs management in 1979, and a master's degree in agricultural economics in 1981. He continues as a member of the MSU Alumni Association and the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association.
Reflecting on his accomplishments, Mr. Curtis credits much of his success to his remarkable determination, perseverance, and willingness to learn and embrace change.
