Dr. Halaris is a board-certified psychiatrist and a professor of psychiatry at Loyola University Medical Center School of Medicine. As a physician, he treats patients suffering from various mental illnesses, including anxiety disorders, major depressive disorders, and bipolar disorders. As an educator, Dr. Halaris brings decades of success and expertise in treatment resistance, pharmacogenomics, psychopharmacology, psychoimmunology, and biological and general psychiatry to the classroom, having notably taught numerous courses and supervised many residents and medical students during his tenure.
Before joining Loyola University, where he also served as chair of the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Halaris was a professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Mississippi Medical Center from 1993 to 2003 and a professor of psychiatry and vice chair of psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University in the School of Medicine between 1984 and 2003. During the same period of time, Dr. Halaris chaired the Department of Psychiatry at The MetroHealth System (formerly Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital), from 1984 to 1993.
As an accomplished researcher, Dr. Halaris confirmed that genetic variants in bipolar disorder, a major psychiatric disorder, can contribute to severity and lack of response to treatment. He also determined that genetic variants predispose individuals to have abnormal blood tests in inflammatory substances, notably one specific substance called C-reactive protein (CRP), which can be measured in the bloodstream. Patients with higher levels of CRP tend to have difficulty responding to pharmacologic treatments and may benefit from combination with anti- inflammatory medication.
As a respected scholar, Dr. Halaris is a member of several editorial boards of prestigious scientific journals, and has been a guest editor for peer-reviewed publications, including the Journal of Affective Disorders Reports and the Journal of Personalized Medicine. He also aims to write about education, pregnancy, the importance of motherhood and fatherhood, psychosocial factors influencing early life and other topics.
In preparation for his career, Dr. Halaris obtained a Doctor of Medicine from Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München in 1967, followed by an internship in surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology in 1968-1969. Dr. Halaris has been certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
To further ensure his place at the forefront of his profession, Dr. Halaris has maintained affiliation with numerous prominent organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the World Psychiatric Association, the Society of Biological Psychiatry, and the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry, the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology, among others. He is also a distinguished fellow and former board examiner of the American Psychiatric Association. Additionally, Dr. Halaris has been serving as Chair of the Immunology and Psychiatry Section of the World Psychiatric Association and he chairs the Task Force on Neuroprogression in psychiatric disorders for the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry.
