An impassioned health care provider, athlete and enthusiast of the arts, Dr. Caryl J. Guth has made notable contributions to her professional areas of focus that have spanned more than 50 years.
Now retired from anesthesiology, Dr. Guth earned commendation through her longstanding relationship with Wake Forest University (WFU). She has played an instrumental role in establishing the Center for Integrative Medicine at the WFU School of Medicine. Earlier in her career, from 1967 to 2000, Dr. Guth was a leader in the anesthesiology department and on the board of directors of the Mills-Peninsula Hospital System in the San Francisco Bay Area. She was elected president of the California Society of Anesthesiologists (1982-1983) and later received their Distinguished Service Award.
Dr. Guth is a member of the WFU International Leadership Circle and the selection committee of the WFU Hall of Fame. She is a prolific sponsor of the women's golf and basketball teams, for which she has provided scholarships and is the namesake of the Caryl J. Guth, MD Women's Golf Wing of the Haddock Golf House of the Arnold Palmer Golf Complex and the Dr. Caryl J. Guth Women's Basketball Clubhouse at the Shah Basketball Complex.
Dr. Guth's ongoing commitments include membership with the Medical Alumni Association of the WFU School of Medicine, for which she is a past president and current board director, and her position on the board of visitors for the WFU School of Medicine and the Dean's Leadership Council. Outside of her numerous endeavors with WFU, Dr. Guth is an independent wellness consultant for Avini Health, through which she promotes ideal health practices and pain control via natural supplements and heavy metal detoxification.
Revered for her contributions to the health care field and her local community, Dr. Guth has served as a member of the board of science and policy advisors of the American Council on Science and Health since 1995. She is also an avid patron of the arts and a recognized member of the Maestro's Circle for the Winston-Salem Symphony and the Norman Johnson Society of the Piedmont Opera.
Dr. Guth studied at Mars Hill College, earning an Associate of Arts in 1955. She went on to Wake Forest University and attained a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Medicine in 1957 and 1962, respectively. Following her internships at the University of Kansas Medical Center and a residency at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Dr. Guth ultimately received her certification from the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Guth has received several accolades from Wake Forest University, such as a Loyal Deacon Award in 2018, the North Carolina Baptist Heritage Award in 2013, and the Deacon Club Member of the Year Award in 2010. She was also named a Distinguished Alumna of the Year by Mars Hill College in 2012. Further acclaimed for her athleticism, Dr. Guth won the Crisp-Casey Award for Best Female Athlete at WFU in 1957 and, years later, would win gold and silver medals for her track performance during the North Carolina Senior Games in 2019.
