Since she was a young girl, Susie K. Whitney was involved in the trucking business. Influenced by her father, who owned a trucking company, she desired to follow in her family's footsteps and establish her own business. Working for several trucking companies early on in her career, she then served in the personnel department for St. Francis Hospital and did office work for Colfax Farmers Elevator. Later, she worked at Primewood Transportation, DTL Transport, before becoming a broker agent for Midnite Express in 1996. She remained in that role until 2008 when she started SMJ Freight Solutions LLC, for which she now serves as president, owner and chief executive officer. Ms. Whitney considers the establishment of the company to be her career highlight. As a woman in the industry starting from the bottom, the odds were stacked against her; however, through honesty and top-notch problem-solving skills, she has been able to reach success and build a team of talented people who rise to meet challenges head-on every day.
