A seasoned educator with years of expertise in anatomy, neuroscience and histology, Dr. Purcell excels as the associate dean of academic affairs, recruitment manager for faculty and chair of the faculty admissions committee at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences. In this capacity, he screens all student applicants and basic science faculty, oversees accreditation materials, and serves as a resource for the University's president. Previously, Dr. Purcell was the dean of basic sciences, chair and professor of anatomy and course director for a number of courses.
During the early stages of his career, Dr. Purcell gained valuable expertise in higher education through various directorial, associate, and teaching roles with A.T. Still University, Logan College of Chiropractic, the University of Missouri, Kansas City, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Des Moines University. Before starting in the field of education, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Monmouth University and a Bachelor of Arts in biology from the University of Kansas. Subsequently, Dr. Purcell received a Master of Arts in physiology from the University of Kansas and a PhD in anatomy and cell biology from the University's Medical Center. Similarly, he completed certificates in novel therapies for chronic inflammation, autoimmunity, allergies, and immuno-oncology through Harvard Medical School.
Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Purcell aligned himself with the American Association for Anatomy, the American Association for Clinical Anatomists, and the Society for Neuroscience. He was a founding member of the Psychoneuroimmunology Research Society. In recognition of his professional work, he was named the Basic Sciences Professor of the Year and received an Outstanding Faculty Teaching and Service Award from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. While his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Purcell takes the most pride in his current work with the University of Medicine and Health Sciences, as well as his research, which has been consistently replicated and widely accepted as common knowledge.
Though hard work and dedication have brought him far in his career, Dr. Purcell credits his success to his passion for teaching. Many of his former students have achieved esteemed positions at various hospitals and universities. In the coming years, Dr. Purcell intends to remain dedicated to his work in higher education while caring for his wife after she received a traumatic brain injury.
