Upon arriving in the United States, she pursued her passion for social justice, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with an emphasis on Comparative Studies and World Development and a minor in Global Studies from the University of California, Davis and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Illinois, Springfield. Backed by her considerable education, she joined the Social Security Administration (SSA) in 2009 as a claims specialist, interviewing claimants regarding eligibility for social security retirement, survivor, disability, and health insurance benefits. Over the years, Ms. Htaung demonstrated her steadfast commitment to public service with the SSA as an operations supervisor, disability examiner, and regional support roles.
In the ensuing years, Ms. Htaung gained valuable professional expertise as a policy program manager for San Francisco Health Plan, through which she analyzed internal and state policies and procedures for recommendations to Executives, streamlined and built systems for policy review process, and developed the policy program. Similarly, she lent her significant skillset to Burma Inc. as a human resources and business partner consultant. Driven to make a larger impact on the healthcare industry, she transferred her expertise to the nonprofit world to build a pipeline of trained bilingual and culturally competent healthcare workers into healthcare career roles, thereby diversifying and expanding the healthcare system in the United States. Drawing on her considerable experience, she excels as the executive director of Diversity in Health Training Institute, which aims to help immigrants and English as Secondary Learners pursue healthcare roles in the healthcare industry. Through Ms. Htaung's invaluable guidance, Diversity in Health Training Institute has more than doubled its revenue from $1 million to $2.5 million, a feat recognized with the California Department of Aging Grant within two years of her leadership. This grant, in turn, helped the organization triple their impact of training more than 170 bilingual caregivers and connect them with seniors who need home care assistance in the comfort of their homes and in their native language.
Throughout her career, Ms. Htaung has aimed to further her education, earning a certificate in human resources in business and a nonprofit executive director certification. Due to her vast breadth of knowledge, she has contributed to several publications, including "Arterial Flow Regulator Enables Transplantation and Growth of Human Fetal Kidneys in Rats" and "Waiting to Be Heard," which was funded by the Isabel Allende Foundation.
In conjunction with her work, Ms. Htaung has contributed to her community by donating to families in need in her home country of Myanmar, participating in walks and fundraisers for Alzheimer's disease, and serving as the elected Executive Vice President of the Social Security Administration's Region 9 Pacific Asian Advisory Council. In recognition of her outstanding work, she received a Senate Certificate of Recognition from State Senator Jackie Speier and numerous awards from the Social Security Administration, including the Deputy Commissioner's Team Award, seven Exemplary Contribution or Service Awards, and three Contribution Performance Awards. While her career has been filled with highlights, Ms. Htaung takes the most pride in contributing to "Waiting to Be Heard," which addressed the topics of police brutality and societal violence from the perspective of a high school student.
Though hard work and dedication have brought her far in her career, Ms. Htaung credits her success to her grit and perseverance.
