FARMINGTON HILLS, MI, March 11, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Tonisha B. Lane has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
With more than a decade of excellence in research on underrepresented and marginalized groups who are accessing and persisting in STEM, Dr. Lane has earned distinction as an assistant professor with Virginia Tech. Since 2019, she has focused her efforts on conducting research, teaching, and service to the university and the profession.
Before her present role, Dr. Lane worked at Michigan State University from 2005 until 2014, starting as an assistant hall director and becoming an engagement research and assessment assistant in 2012. She subsequently served as a consultant for The Bingman Group, LLC in 2012 and was a graduate intern for educational affairs and distance learning for the Wayne County Community College District in 2013, taking a role as a consultant for the United States Department of Education in 2014. Later that year, she was a King Chavez Parks future faculty fellow with Michigan State University and became an assistant professor for the University of South Florida in 2015. During this time, she also was admitted as a McKnight fellow to the Florida Education Fund in 2017.
Likewise dedicated to civil advocacy, Dr. Lane holds an annual event designed for Black student affairs professionals to support their professional development and well-being for the ACPA-College Student Educators International. This two-day workshop allows participants to share information and connect with different members of the organization and professionals in the field. She also lends her expertise as a mentor to the American Education Research Association and to the outstanding book award committee of the Association for the Study of Higher Education. Additionally, she and her husband provide support in teaching and mentorship for Thrive at the Highland Park Baptist Church, where she is an active member.
Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Lane was named an Emerging Scholar by the National Center for Institutional Diversity in 2015 and received an Advocate Award from the ACPA-College Student Educators International in 2017. The following year, she was again recognized as an Emerging Scholar by the ACPA-College Student Educators International and she was admitted to the organization's Diamond Honoree Class in 2024. She also was honored with an Excellence in Research and Creative Scholarship Award from Virginia Tech in 2022.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Lane earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology with a specialization in bioethics, humanities and society in 2005 from Michigan State University. Following this achievement, she attained a Master of Arts in student affairs administration with a concentration in multicultural education in 2008 and a Doctor of Philosophy in higher, adult and lifelong education in 2015, both also from Michigan State University.
Looking into the future, Dr. Lane hopes to achieve a promotion to an associate professor with tenure. She will subsequently focus more on her written projects and research, including a project where she and her colleagues have collected data from more than 80 Black women in the United States who were previously pursuing doctoral degrees.
