Alongside her current role, Dr. Hendrix was deeply involved with East Los Angeles College in various directorial and instructional capacities for over 15 years. From 2008 to 2024, she was an associate faculty member within the Allied Health Department. Dr. Hendrix continued her work as an associate professor within the HIT Program from 2008 to 2024 and served as the program director of various college grants such as Health Information Technology for Economic Clinical Health (HITECH) Program specializing in training individuals for the implementation of electronic healthcare records (EHR) and Los Angeles Healthcare Competencies to Careers Consortium (LAH3C) Health Occupations grant to train individuals seeking professional knowledge in healthcare careers. Dr. Hendrix's other jobs included working as the curriculum specialist and course learning outcome specialist for the Allied Health Department.
Prior to moving into higher education, Dr. Hendrix ran her own Scholastic Minds Childcare Center caring for infant to kindergarten-age students. Before joining East Los Angeles College, Dr. Hendrix was the Dean of Administration and Student Services at St. Francis Career College from 2006 to 2008 and previously held the title of Assistant Dean at Charles R. Drew University College of Science and Health from 2000 to 2006. Her career is marked by a steadfast commitment to education and a passion for supporting individuals in their pursuit of knowledge.
For her contributions, Dr. Hendrix has been awarded the esteemed honor of Educator of the Year. Since 1979, she has held membership with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Additionally, she is a member of the California Association for the Education of Young Children and the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education. As she advanced in her career, Dr. Hendrix earned certification as an AHIMA-approved ICD-10-CM/PCS trainer in 2015, building upon her earliest certification as a registered health information technician, which she earned through AHIMA in 1979.
In all she has achieved, Dr. Hendrix's academic background laid a strong foundation for her professional accomplishments. In 1984, she earned an associate degree in early education and child development from West Los Angeles College followed by a bachelor's degree in liberal studies from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 1992. Several years thereafter, she obtained a Master of Education in curriculum and teaching from the same university before pursuing a doctorate in education with an emphasis on technology, which she obtained from Walden University in 2010.
Outside of her educational accomplishments, Dr. Hendrix cites the benevolent influence of her parents as having been a guiding force throughout her career, and she has remained inspired to emulate their generosity through her work. Reflecting on her professional journey overall, she takes great pride in her ability to assist individuals in supporting individuals in their learning pursuits and assisting them in their acquisition of knowledge.
Intertwined with her professional work, Dr. Hendrix has served as a site surveyor for the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education since 2010. Moreover, her other civic-focused efforts include donating to the American Association of Retired Persons, various Alzheimer's and dementia charities and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Additionally, she volunteers to work with young children through her church.
Looking forward, Dr. Hendrix has set goals to continue expanding her consulting work while also pursuing more opportunities for travel over the next several years. Currently, she is authoring a book aimed at young audiences, which aims to tackle the sensitive issue of racism, as it relates to skin color. Such work not only channels her experiences but reflects her commitment to education and social awareness beyond the classroom.
