Dr. Hansen-Thomas has been recognized for her leadership and commitment to higher education as a teacher and administrator specializing in bilingual education. Employed by Texas Woman's University (TWU) since 2008, she has earned progressive roles. She is now a full professor of bilingual and English as a Second Language (ESL) and the vice provost for research, innovation, and corporate engagement. In addition to lecturing students, Dr. Hansen-Thomas oversees all grants submitted and received, leads mentoring programs for the research faculty, collaborates with corporate engagement activities, and more.
During her distinguished tenure at TWU, Dr. Hansen-Thomas rose from an assistant to full professor, interim dean for the graduate school, associate dean of research and scholarship, and graduate school dean. Earlier in her career, she was an assistant professor at Binghamton University, a top-ranked public university in New York.
As a seasoned researcher in her field, Dr. Hansen-Thomas has published over 85 peer-reviewed journal articles. Her research and funding have contributed significantly to the academic community, having secured millions of dollars in grant money to support her work, allowing her to assist underprivileged students attending public schools at the university.
A native of Texas, Dr. Hansen-Thomas graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts in art history. She subsequently received a Master of Art in bicultural and bilingual education and a Doctor of Philosophy in culture, literature, and language from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. Hansen-Thomas holds certification as a secondary Spanish teacher through the Texas Education Agency, an elementary with bilingual education endorsement through the Texas Education Agency, and an international Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) leadership certification through the TESOL International Association.
As part of her continued commitment to education, Dr. Hansen-Thomas is a member of TESOL, the National Association of Bilingual Educators, the American Educational Research Association, and the National Organization for Research Development Professionals.
In light of her professional achievements, Dr. Hansen-Thomas secured a Fulbright Fellowship from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, in 2016 and received a Community Advocate Award from the Bilingual ESL Association of the Metroplex in 2022.
