Marquis Who's Who Honors Paul Tomlingson for Dedication to the Mining Industry

Paul D. Tomlingson is recognized for distinguished provision of consulting services to the mining industry.

The quality of Tomlingson's maintenance publications have been acknowledged by prominent publications.

DENVER, CO, March 18, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Paul Tomlingson has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Tomlingson has distinguished himself by providing maintenance management consulting services to the mining industry. As the Principal of Paul D. Tomlingson Associates Inc., based in Denver since 1980, he has dedicated over four decades to the design, evaluation and implementation of maintenance management programs, organizations, and information systems.

Mr. Tomlingson's success in providing consulting services to 66 mining operations in 16 countries relates directly to a unique client-involvement consulting practice. Each project is initiated with an operation-wide evaluation followed by a series of seminars attended by those groups and individuals directly responsible for performing or directing the function but, also capable of identifying and implementing realistic and effective improvement actions.

Effective maintenance is a deliberate multi-department activity in which mine and plant managers must be involved. Typically, some managers lack a maintenance background creating a certain "wait and see" attitude. Yet, by requesting that they provide objectives and policies to guide department interactions, they become involved and provide a helpful oversight role. The essential interaction of all departments becomes a reality.

Paul Tomlingson attributes his consulting success to his West Point education (Class of 1953) and its focus on problem solving through the joint efforts of those involved. He also credits his MA in Government (1964) and his MPA (1968) both from UNH, to a people-oriented, joint participation approach to consulting. An earlier listing in Who's Who in the West and a Legion of Honor designation in the Society of Mining Engineers (SME) attest.

The SME Legion of Honor designation credits three textbooks published by SME, 17 Mining Maintenance articles published in Mining Engineering, the SME publication, and a Gold Level designation for contributing over 40 posts to the SME Maintenance Community for members to view and download.

The quality of Tomlingson's maintenance publications have been acknowledged by prominent publications:

Plant Engineering – "The base of Tomlingson's experience is important. He has the credentials to change traditional thinking both within maintenance and about maintenance."

Maintenance Technology – "One of the greats of the maintenance and reliability profession."

Society of Mining Engineers – "Big picture" issues are brought to life providing ideas and techniques to help solve the maintenance problems you're grappling with today."

Mr. Tomlingson's proficiency in maintenance management is reflected in his prolific writing capability. His maintenance-related publications include 14 textbooks, three of which were published by the Society of Mining Engineers and one by McGraw-Hill. His numerous trade journal articles have been published in journals associated with the mining industry including: Mining Engineering, Engineering and Mining Journal, Coal Age, Plant Engineering, Maintenance Technology, World Coal, Production Engineering, Industrial Maintenance and Plant Operations and, The Engineering Society for Advancing Mobility Land, Sea, Air and Space.

Paul Tomlingson's consulting projects have been carried out in the United States, Canada, Scotland, Ireland, Indonesia, Chile, Mexico, South Africa, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Kyrgyzstan, Colombia, the North Pole, and Peru.

This exposure to a multitude of operations provided opportunity to experience, study and learn from a variety of approaches to maintenance management. Of special concern was education applied to the designation of maintenance superintendents. Some mining organizations promoted from within giving emphasis to diagnostic and repair skills. Often, these superintendents were launched with no preparation. They could only emulate what their predecessors had done.

Others mining operations gave emphasis to managerial skills with an appreciation of the multi-department effort effective maintenance required.

The more difficult projects were those of superintendents with only a diagnosis and repair (hand me the wrench) outlook. Yet, once educated on the essential multi-department collaboration effective maintenance requires, the practical attributes of the diagnosis/repair types performed well. Education made the difference.

Mr. Tomlingson's proficiency in maintenance management is reflected in his work and his prolific writing career. He has authored numerous technical publications that have become essential reading for professionals in the mining industry. But his literary contributions extend beyond technical manuals. Mr. Tomlingson has penned two volumes of short stories that draw from his experiences in the military, consulting, and a solid sense of humor. His stories have been freely circulated among nearly 200 appreciative fellow residents of his retirement community where he is affectionately known as the "resident author." His stories have been published in The Monterey County Herald (CA), The Grand County Gazette (CO) and The Rutland Herald Weekend Magazine (VT).

Beyond his professional endeavors Mr. Tomlingson has enjoyed giving back. He recently began organizing monthly meetings for a group of over 20 veterans and several widows in his retirement community. He has reached out to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide coaching and assistance in their application for veteran's benefits.

Paul Tomlingson served his country in the U.S. Army for over 14 years. But after serving in Vietnam acceded to a 7–member family decision to resign his commission on the verge of promotion to Lieutenant Colonel.

While the transition from the miliary to consulting was initially challenging, it was made easier with advice sought, gladly given, and enthusiastically applied to result in a dedicated commitment to provide consulting services to the mining industry.

As a concluding gesture to the mining industry, Paul Tomlingson has converted selected chapters of his textbook: Maintenance in Transition - The Journey to World Class Maintenance into a PowerPoint format. The resulting 22 lessons meet an essential need. The course can be presented on-site by personnel from within the organization. Remote mining operations who cannot attend distant training or spare key personnel to attend will benefit. And by placing the course in a digital library, all who aspire to a better understanding of maintenance are among the benefactors.
