Dr. Vernon has established a distinguished career with the District of Columbia Public Schools as a School Psychologist and School-Based Registered Play Therapist. Since 2014, she has dedicated herself to working with students aged 5 to 22, focusing on low-incidence populations with severe and profound disabilities. Her expertise and commitment have been instrumental in fostering the growth and development of these students. Additionally, since 2016, Dr. Vernon has shared her knowledge and experience as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Behavioral Sciences department at the University of Maryland Global Campus.
Before her current roles, Dr. Vernon served as a School Psychologist for The Noble Network of Charter Schools in Greater Chicago from 2013 to 2014. This role was preceded by her time as a Doctoral School Psychology intern at the Counseling and Learning Center in Franklin, Tennessee, between 2012 and 2013. Dr. Vernon's journey in education began as a Special Education teacher, first at Ashland City Elementary School in Ashland City, Tennessee, from 2004 to 2005, then at Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools between 2005 to 2011, and finally at Tennessee Virtual Academy from 2011 to 2013.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Vernon is passionate about personal growth and cultural experiences. She is also active in her community through the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. as a member of the Elder Care committee, Autism walk program and Autism Awareness program coordinator, and co-chair of the Autism Acceptance committee.
Dr. Vernon's educational background laid the foundation for her career achievements. She received a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina, in 2002, followed by a Master's degree in Special Education in 2005 and a Doctor of Philosophy in School Psychology from Tennessee State University in Nashville in 2013. Dr. Vernon's Doctoral degree enabled her to garner expertise as a Special Education teacher in another area of the field, allowing her to work with students and parents to help them better understand what was happening and collaborate with educators in a different role. Additionally, Dr. Vernon received credentials as a School-Based Registered Play Therapist.
Adding to her professional commitments, Dr. Vernon is a member of the Association for Play Therapy. Eager for the future of her career, she is inspired by global practices in special education and therapy and looks forward to traveling overseas to learn how other countries implement Special Education, School Psychology, and Play Therapy to gain insights into their objectives and methodologies to further enrich the community she serves back home.
