Mr. Derbel is a distinguished educator associated with Georgetown University, where he has been serving as a lecturer since 2022. Renowned for his expertise, he is involved in teaching various content-focused courses and, since 2022, began teaching courses in Arabic to students of the School of Foreign Service, such as Arabic for Diplomats, which is tailored to those students aspiring to international careers in the foreign service. Such courses are designed for graduate and undergraduate students with at least three years of Arabic study. Separately, Mr. Derbel began managing the George Washington University's Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowship in 2022, a federal grant program from the department of education. He had also taught Arabic courses at the same university from 2021 to 2023 mostly to students who hail from the renowned Elliott School of International Affairs.

His extensive experience includes a decade-long tenure as a Senior Political Specialist from 2011 to 2021, where he played a pivotal role during the Arab Spring. He was also a program analyst for the US-Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Regional Office between 2010 to 2011. Mr. Derbel also spent over a decade and a half in the classroom before being acquired by Georgetown University, imparting his knowledge as an Arabic language and culture instructor at the Foreign Service Institute's Arabic Field School in Tunis from 1995 to 2010 and as an instructor at the CLS Summer Institute in Tunis in 2009 and 2010. His early career included positions as an Arabic instructor with the Association de Cooperation en Tunisie pour le développement et l'éducation between 1989 and 1993. Moreover, Mr. Derbel found success as a Logistics Coordinator and Arabic tutor with the Peace Corps from 1986 to 1989.
Mr. Derbel draws satisfaction outside his professional endeavors through music as an avid percussionist. He is also involved in civil work as the Acting Vice President of Babylon, a nonprofit organization founded in 2021 that focuses on working with underserved communities by implementing grants. The organization also works with veterans. Babylon recently implemented its first project in the counterterrorism category in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State. It included a series of educational videos to warn young people about the dangers of joining extremist groups.
In preparation for his career, Mr. Derbel received a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Tunis in 1990, a Master of Arts in English Language and Literature from the University of La Manouba in 1998, and a Master of Public Policy from the European University of Tunis in 2019.
Eager for the future of his career in education, Mr. Derbel enjoys sharing his experiences, serving as a mentor in other people's lives, and making a positive impact. He attributes his success to his upbringing as a son of two dedicated parents who instilled in him the values of hard work and strong ethics. In light of his achievements, Mr. Derbel received over 10 Meritorious Honor Awards from the U.S. Embassy between 1998 and 2021.
