Before entering entrepreneurship, he garnered success as a partner at Cooper Carry from 1988 to 1999, where he focused on architectural design and urban planning. Previously, Mr. Heapes was an associate partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill between 1981 and 1988, contributing to the firm's reputation for unique architectural solutions.

Mr. Heapes's journey began with an early interest and passion for architecture and graphic design, which he nurtured during childhood by drawing in the mountains outside Denver. Following high school, he earned a bachelor's degree in environmental design from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Master of Architecture with a focus on architecture and graphic design from the University of California at Berkley in 1980.
